Honestly surprised it didn't get more recognition over here. It's a tough watch at times but it's also pretty accessible and universal. Glad it's so easy to access now at least, maybe people will stumble upon it.
For those who don't know, Hamaguchi directed the great Asako I & II and Happy Hour, along with a bunch of lesser seen films. This short/mid length film from 2016 is probably my favourite of his works though.
It’s great. Few do social realism better than Loach and I think this one in particular is getting slept on. People tend to write off the late work of these directors that spend decades exploring the same handful of themes in similar ways but his last two films are as vital as any.
Cool thanks, I loved I, Daniel Blake and really need to see more of Loach’s stuff. Definitely gonna check this one out now.
Looks like The Twentieth Century is out there. Such a bizarro film, I can't recommend it enough if that's your thing. Like a lowbrow Guy Maddin with such a wonderful sense of aesthetic and world building. @yung_ting you should definitely watch this lol Rankin's Tesla World Light is one of my favourite shorts of the 2010s too, it's available to watch here.
Haha that looks incredible, immediately downloaded. Will probably stay up and watch it to tonight or tomorrow Watched The Whistlers the other day, thought it was great! Would never have guessed it was the same director as The Treasure, going to have to check out Police, Adjective soon
The Whistlers is definitely a bit different for him. All his stuff is quite good though. When Evening Fell in Bucharest is probably my favourite along with The Treasure. I would also recommend his documentary Infinite Football which kinda plays like an arthouse Nathan for You lmao
RIP Obayashi Nobuhiko, he passed yesterday after four years with cancer. Apparently when he was diagnosed they gave him months to live but he stuck around and made another 2 films in that time. People have been sharing his films around because they are quite hard to access aside from the few on the Criterion Channel. I’ve got two that others put together with a bunch of films in them. If anyone is interested, send me a PM.
The first two films from the DAU. project (both of which premiered at this year's Berlinale) are up for rental on their website now. DAU CINEMA DAU. Natasha won the Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution for it's cinematography in the main competition. There's some background info on this behemoth project on Wikipedia: DAU (project) - Wikipedia
Pablo Larrain's Ema is getting a one-day, free streaming premiere on MUBI on May 1st. I'm not a massive fan of his but I really liked this one. Plus it has an incredible score from Nicolas Jaar. Sign up here: Ema: Welcome to Great Cinema
