Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Creepy is very good (so is Daguerreotype but people don’t seem to agree). Guy Maddin’s The Forbidden Room. Bertrand Mandico’s The Wild Boys.
It is but it was also their best of the year for 2014. My pick would unquestionably be Jeanette but I think P'tit Quinquin is probably his next strongest this decade.
Good observation, definitely a curious omission. It was the 2011 list and The New World was on the last decade list. I'm mostly just happy that the Manoel de Oliveira film made it on there.
I know calling a 14 hour film a must see is a bit hmmmm but... It’s in very defined chapters/episodes, so it’s easy to split up
Woah, yeah, all I've heard about this is super exciting, so I'm going to have to make time for it. Really cool to see them putting it out there like this.
The filmmaker was very adamant at one point that the only way to see this would be in a cinema so I’ll be curious to see if this is a one off or if they’ll give it a proper release later. I’d love a nice blu-ray set. The film is fantastic, about as much fun as you can have with Serious Art Cinema.
New Wave cinema legend Anna Karina dies aged 79 RIP to a real one. Her performances are so integral to the essence of the New Wave and her work in Vivre as vie is one of my favorite performances ever. If anyone is trying to see her outside of a Godard film, Rivette’s The Nun is amazing.
Synonyms was fantastic. The camera has this kinetic energy that kept me glued, the tone was hard to pin down and felt truly singular I’m a sucker for a great final scene and this one will stick with me
Down to just Portrait, A Hidden Life, Little Women and Waves and 2019 will be wrapped, hope I can squeeze time in around the holiday

I just started watching this French TV series The Bureau, and find it a fascinating watch. Basically a spy thriller series set in Paris, with high production value. So cool hearing the different French accents
Started the year off right Young Ahmed - Really liked but couldn’t help but feel like it was rather slight in comparison to their other works until the ending, an emotional gut punch that will stay with me for some time. Don’t believe what you see written about this, their trademark empathy is well intact Monos - Visually this a marvel and it’s heightened by Mica Levi’s score. More abstract than I expected going in and all the better for it. Just remarkable and the last shot will haunt me, a totally visceral experience
I feel like I have a general sense of what you like but I often get it wrong! I’d be surprised if you didn’t like Monos though
also plan on checking out Zombi Child. I love every film I've seen by Bertrand Bonello so I'm excited
Jia is that dude, Ash is Purest White is incredible. Zombie Child is very strong but I prefer House of Tolerance and Nocturama. Random rec: Happy as Lazzaro. Bacurau is also very strong, if you have access to that.
Happy as Lazarro is such a gem and Bacurau is one of those “gotta see it to believe it” things, so good
