Movie was a ton of fun, I can see why everyone liked it so much. The ending fight was disappointing to me though. I also don't think they explained her powers very well.
It's tough because she didn't even know the full extent of her powers until the very end, because she didn't know that she was actually the "God-Killer" herself, not the sword. So I understand why they had a difficult time explaining the powers of someone who doesn't know what they are themselves.
I get why too, it still just seemed so weird to me. The movie also shows amazons dying from bullets and that she has to shield herself from gunfire, but then is getting slammed into the airfield from a hundred feet up (which would do more damage than a bullet). Then she is fighting German soldiers and dodging their attacks because they might cause her damage, but then she jumps into a building and destroys it on impact to kill the sniper.
the amazon's dying from bullets was confusing to me because wonder woman had such strong armor...I feel like this all could have been negated with a scene just explaining various details about her armor. Like, This gets me in a ton of superhero movies (and yes, this is where my suspension of disbelief breaks in nearly every movie), but they never explain why her armor is the color it is. It'd make sense if all the other Amazonians wore those colors but she was the only one seemingly to have special armor. kudos to the movie though for not actually calling her wonder woman or doing some stupid bit about that. That's something I liked. The lack of any cheesiness in this movie that Marvel movies have had me come to expect. The one exchange I was prepared for was before the No Man's Land scene where Chris Pine says, like, "It's No Man's Land...no man can go there!". I was super prepared for a cheesy, "well then you need a woman" or something like that. That's what I'd expect in a Marvel movie.
I'll admit I cannot see why people are raving about this film. It was ok for sure, but not a film I feel is head and shoulders above others...maybe a rewatch would do me some good.
To be fair, the armor Wonder Woman wears was taken from the Amazons' vault of ancient treasures. It's different from what the others were wearing. Also, there was a brief moment after the battle on the beach, where Diana was getting patched up, where the doctor essentially looked at where her bandage was and commented that it was strange because she had already healed from her wound. I thought it was going to come out that she had some kind of accelerated healing factor due to her being the daughter of a god, but it was never addressed again. Kind of made me think Robin Wright's sacrifice might've been for nothing, considering she knew what Diana really was.
If anything I think Marvel has become the product of producing what people expect comic based movies to be. DC has had some faults, but I'm really into some of the different approaches they are taking. I'm just sitting at work thinking about how quickly I can see the No Man's Land scene again.
I'm of the opinion that once the first US showing of a movie is here, people should avoid the thread until they see it for themselves, or if they don't care about spoilers.
I think part of the overly positive response is its cultural significance and impact. And I'm totally cool with that. It wasn't the best movie, but it was pretty damn good. One of my favorite things I love hearing about this movie is the amount of women who cried because of this movie. That after all these years, a character that they most identified with was on screen and done very well. I have loved hearing women say how long they have been waiting for a movie like this. It made me remember once again how just expected it is that I, a white male, will have representation in almost every movie. I don't need to hope I have representation, that's never been an issue for me. I think it's awesome these women get to feel what I have taken for granted my whole life.
This movie was very much a "Marvel" movie. Probably one reason I liked this so much more than all the over DCEU nonsense so far.
While I agree and find it easy to avoid a thread until I see a movie, I don't mind taking an extra second to type a spoiler tag out of courtesy for people who don't have my will power.
I'd say the Saturday of release. If you really wanted to see it, you'd see it within 24 hours. If timing didn't work out, why would you come into a thread for it? That's just foolish.
But doesn't it make sense to talk open and freely about a movie that just released? I avoided the Guardians thread for a week because I couldn't see the movie until then. I avoided this thread for a similar amount of time. One should be responsible for avoiding spoilers on their own. I'd think not going into a thread on a forum about said movie would make sense.
Its more to gauge what amount of time people think is appropriate. I don't want to discuss spoilers for anything as a whole.
I personally don't understand why it's hard to spoiler-tag plot stuff but whatever. If we're going to be spoiling everything without regard for people who haven't gotten time to see it but want to know how everyone feels about the movie generally, then the OP should change the thread name to say there are spoilers here.
While that's definitely a good thing both my girlfriend and I were disappointed that the story broke down to standard romance fare. I feel it would have been better to have had there be a mutual respect that didn't have to be a love story or show Diana unlocking her powers defending her mother or the island rather than Steve dying. Also the war buddies felt like caricatures.
