Someone compared the resolution to Mr. Satan from DBZ asking for people to share energy to Goku for the spirit bomb haha
Yeah, this was a huge disappointment after the first one being so great. Super convoluted story that makes zero sense, which made the scenes that were supposed to be emotional absolutely meaningless. The CGI for cheetah was awful and the ending was very anticlimactic. The writing made these acting performances suck, I feel bad for the actors. The film needed more action and a story that actually made sense.
Definitely liked the first one more, even though the villains in WW84 were more entertaining. Wish the CGI and effects were better. I did like that the brought back the "Beautiful Lie" score from BvS. That was a nice touch. Using the score from Sunshine took me by surprise, but I get it that piece of score is amazing. Was jokingly hoping they'd work "Ride the Lightning" into this somehow. I mean that album came out in '84 and she literally swings on lightning in the movie!
I liked this more than most people here it seems. I think it’s kinda wild that people are rating this lower than Suicide Squad, which I just rewatched yesterday since I’m doing podcasts on both today. Some quick thoughts though: CGI could have been better. I’m not super bothered by the lack of needle drops in this. Could have been 20-30 minutes shorter for sure. I thought Pascal and Wiig played their roles well, felt like villains straight from the pages of a comic book. Does the story have problems? Sure does. But I got the point they were making with the story from Diana’s past and how it correlated to the 84 storyline. Totally get why a lot of people don’t like it though!
I enjoyed the first half a lot. Goes off the rails around Egypt (why is this entire section in the film?) and the last half hour or so is just an incoherent CGI mess. A very strange movie.
Lots of Donner comparisons going around and of course that’s spot on but I was really getting Schumacher vibes too, especially from the villains.
Don’t have HBO Max, & not in a hurry to watch this right now, but still wild to see how sour a response this has gotten. Between co-writing this, writing the comics Doomsday Clock & Three Jokers, & the mess around Joss Whedon’s Justice League... Geoff Johns’ image as the good DC guy has really imploded over the past year & some change. With him launching an Image Comics series next year, wonder if his time at DC has finally run its course. (Also a bit nervous, based on things I’ve read & seen, about Patty Jenkins going from this to Cleopatra & Star Wars.)
Aww man - all kidding aside I was really looking forward to reading your thoughts on this movie. You always have really articulate thoughts on this stuff and I always enjoy see what you have to say, especially about more polarizing movies like this.
Yeah anyone rating this lower than Suicide Squad is dead wrong lol. This is definitely better than Man of Steel, BvS, SS, and Justice League. It’s just also a lot worse than all the good DCEU movies.
I'd put this behind BvS and JL. Man if the whole movie was like the mall scene, that is like the perfect level of cheese/80s Donner Superman.
I found the whole opening mall scene of this movie to be completely offputting, hokey, and just nonsensical that I may have been taken out of the movie in the first ten minutes.
I have enough thoughts before watching it that, when I do finally get around to it, I’m sure I’ll end up dropping some post that’ll be (much like this movie, apparently) much longer than it needs to be, lol. Been catching up on some of the good movies I missed this year, though, so watching a long, subpar comic book film ain’t a priority at the moment. At least New Mutants had the decency to only take an hour & a half of my time!
Agree with most of the criticisms in here. Just didn't find myself having much fun or enjoying it like the first. Steve and Maxwell were easily the best parts of the movie. Give me more Pedro please
What is the fascination with shooting comic book action scenes in the dark? That climactic fight scene is incoherent.
