The FIFA laws of the game says this: I'm not watching, so I don't know if she was playing the ball or not. If she was, it shouldn't be a red.
Googling about it shows this: Denying a goalscoring opportunity: Red card rule relaxed by IFAB However, players committing accidental fouls that deny a goalscoring chance will now be cautioned instead. Which is what was determined to have happened in this game.
It was actually changed. It is now no longer a red if the defender tries to go for the ball. Which was not the case here, the US player basically just ran into her.
Doesn't it also have to be denial of an obvious goal scoring opportunity? Whereas if its just a foul in the box, its a penalty but not a red?
Gutted. Absolutely gutted. We deserved better there. The players gave everything. There was a blantant red card missed at the start of the second half for an elbow on Scott that would have changed the game. Was a bit disappointed that Neville didn’t gamble and bring on Duggan and Taylor. Was very strange to see Haughton step up for the penalty and not stick with Parris. Can’t see past the US winning the tournament now. We’re clearly a world class partner for Haughton and a world class midfielder short. Bright and Walsh have the ball away one to many times for me. Bardsley was a big miss tonight, I think she would have saved both headers. Big couple of years ahead now before the Euros at home, which will be make or break for Neville. Was very impressed with Dunn tonight, thought she handled the double threat of Daly and Bronze very well.
