Didn’t expect this movie to make me cry, but several moments got me haha. Amazing performances all around. The dance scene in particular was a surprise, crazy how much emotion Cynthia could convey without saying a single word.
Seeing all these reviews makes me both excited and a little upset that I won’t be able to see it for another few weeks. The musical is one of my favorites and I’m glad to see they have stuck close to it and done it justice.
Saw this last night. I can see what some people have been saying about the staging and pacing, but damn if me and my girlfriend didn't get absolutely wrecked at Defying Gravity. Great film.
The biggest surprise for me was how consistently hilarious Ariana Grande was. Would love to see more of this kinda thing from her.
Part 2 will be the real test but the fact this is doing well at the box office is huge for getting more musicals. Maybe even some musicals that aren't scared to be musical in the trailers!
Just serious enough. I love those three words, that's how I feel about the entire movie. I was worried it was going to be too silly as a fantasy musical. For example, I tried watching the movie Into The Woods once but I could not get into it. Wicked, on the other hand, was just sooo cinematic. I can't think of how else to describe it. Everything came together so well. I was even moved to tears more than once!
Saw this today. Loved it. Can't wait for Part 2. Thought it absolutely nailed the tone with it not coming off as cheesy. The opening scene was very unsettling with everyone cheering the witch's death and I actually felt like Grande sold Glenda as being mildly disturbed by the scene. I don't know if that was intentional. That and the film as a whole has themes that I felt are pretty reflective on current times and it makes me depressed to think how much of that will either fly over people's heads or be co-opted.
I have never seen the musical, so don't spoil me on the second half, but I am now subscribing to my own half-baked conspiracy theory that The Wizard Of Oz is just a propaganda film to distract us from the truth. I say this not just because the witch's portrayal here is wildly inconsistent with her portrayal in Oz, but also because I feel like her death is now a major plot hole. You cannot tell me that she's never been rained on even once in her life. The idea of her dissolving from a bucket of water is ludicrous. I'm a Wicked Truther. Stop the lies.
Either the The Wizard Of Oz movie or Wicked and The Wiz are non-canonical because how can Elphaba and Galinda have backstories if they're just a 13 year old girl's dream lol, don't think too much about it
