i guess rise realized that alt-right red pill dudes who use 'cuck' unironically make a lot of money and decided to market towards them. that's my only reasoning on why this got approved.
I feel like the choice of this video and single is some weird new age dog whistle marketing. So many of the YouTube/Twitter comments defending this band share so much language with alt-right arguments about other shit.
Just made it through about a minute of that horrendous music video and am left with three thoughts: 1) Dear god, the lyrics to this song aren't just creepy and misogynistic - they're just plain bad. 2) The fact that this douchenozzle has actual connections to Travis Barker is mind-blowing. Like, why would he want to be associated with these creeps? 3) I could have sworn the emo acoustic troubadour vibe died with Front Porch Step's effective banishment from the scene a few years ago. Clearly, I need to put my head back in the sand.
I disagree with this take on it. I think these are normal feelings to have as a teenager. But that doesn't excuse it, and that's why conversations need to take place like the one between Jason and this kid on Twitter. Teens will always have these feelings, we can't change that, but what we can change is the way they are taught to react to those feelings. There are healthy ways to deal with and express these feelings, and we need to encourage that while strongly discouraging things like this song, which is where @scottlechowicz's point comes in that if we stop this now, it won't be the model for how a teenager should cope with those feelings.
Mmmm nah. I can see getting drunk, in your feelings, and writing this. But you'd have to be a bigot to wake up the next morning and not put it straight in the trash. Never mind getting in the studio and making a music video. No excuses.
i guess i was a lil naive thinking rise would do better. the teens i come into contact with, are considered 'woke' so i'm a little surprised that a fraction of them eat this up
we're all in our own little bubble, it's hard to realize how much improvement still needs to happen even when it feels like we're moving in the right direction
Here's the gist of my take: It's 100% okay to vent frustrations and pain in your art about significant others. If it wasn't, there would probably be very little music left. Yes, teenagers in particular are more prone to being filter-free and lacking common sense to know where the line is merely by virtue of being teenagers. But using derogatory language to do it is where the line gets crossed. Your ex cheated on you and broke your heart? Call her an asshole. Did she do it more than once? That's abusive. You can say so. But using gendered slurs (ones with violent and incredibly degrading connotations, at that) about someone you theoretically cared about? (Or threatening violence, as was the case with so many of the songs we all grew up with - completely not okay.) Which words you use matter, and how you use them matters. It's bad look. It's misogyny. And that's the problem, because it implies a whole lot about your beliefs underneath the surface. And in 2017, I don't buy that a plugged in member of that generation (not to mention every single person who greenlit this trashpile) somehow managed to not know where that line was. I'm just really, really tired of people acting like words don't mean things.
Jason Isbell once said "if all your song is doing is hurting someones feelings, then ya got a shit song." I wish someone would have told me that when I was younger and thought these types of songs were even semi-cool. He's really going to regret writing these one day.
Thanks for taking it down Jason. There's this endless ocean of bands I need to check out and I have no time to waste on creeps. There's a lot of good music out there that doesn't disrespect women, so why settle for less?
Obviously it should go without saying, but imma say it anyway: Songs can reflect and reinforce problematic mindsets that can then manifest into actual physical or psychological harm. Words matter.
Read the lyrics without hearing the song and honestly thought someone hacked rise records youtube and put that crap there. Can't believe they would release this.
That's what I'm getting at. I don't think it's abnormal to have these feelings, especially when you've been hurt. Therapy is a way to help learn how to healthily and effectively deal with said emotions.
