Alrighty, new here. I don't know much about whiskey. I know I like Laphroaig and Glenlivet. What are good ones similar? Also I'd like to try some bourbon and not sure where to start.
Welcome! I started strictly with scotch and have slowly made my way over to bourbon since it's (usually) cheaper and the selection is wider. The 10 and 12 year entries from Laphroaig and Glenlivet are definitely good places to start. Glenlivet is from the Speyside region where a lot of the most popular distilleries are. Laphroaig is an Islay scotch, which is pretty much where most of the heavy-hitting peaty distilleries are. For stuff similar to Glenlivet, there's Glenfiddich (another massively popular brand), Balvenie, Aberlour, and Macallan. All good choices. Balvenie 12 Doublewood was the second scotch I ever bought and I've loved it ever since. Can be had for $60-80 depending on where you are. As far as Laphroaig, that's on the smoky side of things. Ardbeg 10, Lagavulin 12, and Talisker 10 are what you're looking for. Definitely an acquired taste, but if you already like Laphroaig then we have to go deeper! And yeah for bourbon I'm not nearly as knowledgable but yes the aforementioned Knob Creek 9 is good, 12 is great, 15 is amazing if you can find it. My latest favorite is the George Dickel 8 year and you can get it really cheap at Costco.
A little late to this convo, but absolutely co-sign the Talisker recommendation - not only a great entrypoint scotch, but just an excellent drink all round
Whiskey hunting in Denver, (from New Mexico) found me the last Elijah Craig barrel proof for 69. Stoked. Look at that batch #
Finally got them all. My contribution/theme for when I host whiskey night next with my friends. Just got the 15 year today and had to crack it open. Super good.
One of those days where I'm pouring a glass right after work Nothing bad happened. Sometimes it's just one of those days
Finally found me a bottle of Eagle Rare. Stoked to try that for the first time. Also, cracked open that Knob Creek single barrel for my buddies whiskey night this month. Oh man, definitely the best. Least favorite was the 15 year. 12 year was second.
