As has been discussed, there are plenty of big names for them to go after should they do this in 2023. I bet they kicked the fires on Fall Out Boy but I feel like that band has been trying to make a point to quietly distance themselves from this scene for a bit.
Look at the line-up. What other band does Bowling for Soup most closely sound like stylistically? Maybe Four Year Strong or ADTR if you sucked out all of the heavy, double-bass drumming, screaming, etc. I wasn't saying they sound the same. More that Alkaline Trio is the closest thing to a band they sound like on the entire line-up. Hah. The more traditional style of "pop-punk" with snotty/gritty or whatever vocals isn't really represented.
I'd pair Bowling For Soup with We The Kings, Mayday Parade, Boys Like Girls, The Maine, 3OH!3, State Champs, Avril, All American Rejects, and The Ready Set before I'd even think of putting them in the same sentence as Alkaline Trio hahaha
I debated putting AAR in the sentence too. I guess I just think of them as being more reminiscent of the 90s. Straight-forward, four chords, no keyboards or whatever, etc. Literally just talking about the way they sound I do think they're much closer to Alkaline Trio than most of the artists you mentioned, TBH. I say that as a person who doesn't care bout Bowling for Soup and loves Alkaline Trio. So it kinda hurt my heart to compare them In terms of the era they came out in, you're spot-on.
Yeah, I dunno. I'm not a fan of Bowling For Soup either, but I think stylistically they sound way more like We The Kings and at least most of the other bands I listed than Alkaline Trio. I guess I just don't hear what you're hearing, or I've only heard the shitty BFS songs that sound like some of the other punk influenced pop bands on the lineup. Bands on the lineup that I would actually compare more to Alkaline Trio: AFI, The Used, Taking Back Sunday, Senses Fail, Silverstein, Story of the Year, Thursday, Anberlin, Hawthorne Heights, Saosin, etc. I wouldn't compare any of those bands to BFS.
Yeah, I think we just have very different contexts. Probably an age thing versus what we listen to overall? Hah. I'm also realizing that I completely ignored Bayside... I align Alkaline Trio more with Green Day, the Bouncing Souls, the Lawrence Arms, Smoking Popes, Off With Their Heads, and so on. More traditional pop-punk. I don't think they sound anything like the bands you listed except that they have darker lyrics and an overall darker tone. But the general song structures and delivery, not so much. (Though I can also see how you'd link/associate them with a band like AFI or Thursday.)
Yeah, I mean, if Alkaline Trio announced a tour with any of the bands I mentioned, I don't think anyone would really ask any questions. Like an Alkaline Trio/TBS tour would make total sense. Same as if We The Kings or The Ready Set were to announce a tour with Bowling For Soup. Makes total sense. But if Alkaline Trio and Bowling For Soup were to tour together, this conversation would happen again, for sure haha.
ALK3 is definitely a weird one in terms of scene, and I’ve never really clumped them in with a particular scene/era of that sort of music. They have a lot of crossover appeal and could play with just about anyone in punk/pop punk/emo. I mean, the co-headlined with NFG in 2013 and just co-headlined with Bad Religion last year. There’s lots of crossover fandom
Random thought: Could Green Day also be a potential band in play if they were to do this again next year? I’d say GD headlining with a lineup leaning more towards the pop punk side would be the big ticket for 2023
haha yup. i live in SLC so i've been there a few times for random shows. i usually drive down on the day of the show, stay the night, and leave as soon as i wake up haha.
If Connor can stand for his set, it will be something. I’m not sure what he will even play. All these bands were during the Fevers and Mirrors/Lifted album cycles. He doesn’t play much of that these days. I can see Glassjaw playing an entire set from Coloring Book or the new album to piss peopl off
My friend joined the waitlist a few days ago for the tickets. He just got an email saying he was approved for 4 tickets... for the 10/29 date. WTF? Tickets for that are not even out yet and he joined the waitlist for 10/22.
Why do you have a feeling these shows are going to end up getting cancelled before the end of the summer
hoping for this! at the moment, resale prices still beat out official prices because of cheaper hotels/flights. I'll be patient
I got an email from FrontGateTickets basically sayimg that everyone who was waitlisted for Weekend 1 had their requests moved to Weekend 2 unless they cancel waitlist requests today.
Why do y’all hate Vegas? I love Vegas and if I get tickets for weekend 2 I plan making it a nice vacation
I got the same email. At first I was like, OK, makes sense. But the more I thought about it, the shittier/more slimeball of a move it seemed to me. There's been many times in the recent past where I've been unable to check my email for whatever reason. I signed up for the first weekend, maybe I couldn't make it to the next weekend and for them to just automatically charge me for that if I don't cancel within 24 hours. seems borderline illegal.
Looks like I got the email yesterday about my waitlist request being moved to weekend 2 and needing to respond in the next 24 hours at 7:11pm and then I apparently got the second email saying I've got a ticket for weekend 2 today at 5:43pm. Ummm that's not 24 hours, like what if I hadn't been able to check my email yesterday or today?
Right...exactly. Like I purposely do not check my email on the weekends so I'd be screwed if it happened then. It is absurd. Idk if there was something in the T&Cs when we went on the waitlist, but this just really rubs me the wrong way.
