Samesies. I've had plenty of times where one of their songs has been stuck in my head and I've thought about listening but so far have been able to hold off.

 

I just put Songs of Praise on. Think I'm going to like it. Love the mix of genres on that record. Excited to finally listen to all of it.

Alright. I am a day late on my contract with @JediMasterKevo182 . But I am hitting play on Hawthorne Heights' Hurt. Now I haven't listened to this band since The Silence in Black and White. I was never a huge fan of the album. It was just kind of "there" for me. So this should be an interesting listen. All my thoughts will be posted in this one post, similar to how @bachna84 does. Here we go:

There Was a Kid, Pt. 3
This song starts off sounding pretty good. I like the guitar work quite a bit. When the vocals kick in it kind of loses it for me. It sounds like they are going for a mewithoutYou kind of spoken word thing, but the first thing that came to my mind was Butthole Surfers Pepper

The Darkest Times
I like the instruments on this one. Brings me back to the 2000's in a good way. Kinda surprised it came out in 2015. Again not huge on the vocals here. It seems like his voice is higher compared to The Silence of Black and White, which isn't totally a bad thing. The screaming still sounds the same, which is surprising cause didn't the original screamer die? I don't mind the lyrics, they aren't stand out or anything but again remind of a mid 2000's band.

Common Crook
This song doesn't sound like Hawthorne Heights to me. Sounds more pop-punkish to me. Not a bad song at all. Pretty catchy honestly and will probably be stuck in my head the rest of the day. Song seemed shorter than it was, I don't know if that was a good thing or not. Probably my favorite from the ep so far.

Beneath the Silver String
Not huge on this one. It reminds me of SOTY a lot. Probably a good thing for someone a fan of both bands, but just isn't a sound I'm super into personally. One thing I'm finding is the overall sincerity from these guys really shines through though. Like I have a hard time hating on something or disliking it when its so sincere. So it definitely has that going for it!

Hurt
The title track starts out with a fun little riff. Not a huge fan of the vocals on this one. He almost sounds bored in the verses. Then the chorus hits and again he just seems so sincere that I can't totally hate on it. If the whole song was like the chorus I'd probably be bigger on it. Not huge on the lyrics overall, but again they are pretty dang sincere.

Young Again
I dig the instrumental intro on this one a lot. Some of the issues I have with the rest of the album are at play here, mostly just the vocals. But the chorus is really cool on this one. I like the screams in the background almost harmonizing with the clean vocals. Lyrics are better on this one than the other songs IMO. This one might have the best repeat value for me honestly. Its the least "Hawthorne Heights" sounding song for me which is a good thing for me as well.

Tail Lights
This song is just ok. It sounds like Hawthorne Heights doing their best Yellowcard impression. Not a bad song, just not really my thing at all. Probably my least favorite on the ep.

Bury My Bones at Crystal Cove
Not huge on the vocals as this one begins. I don't think the singer does a great job at sounding "dark" like it seems like he is going for. And then the pre-chorus sounds very SOTY. Chorus is really good though. Might be my favorite chorus on the record so far.

As a whole I'd say its better than The Silence in Black and White. It's not really the type of music I find myself attracted to, but I honestly didn't dislike listening to it. I expected to be cringing throughout, and didn't find myself doing that. The sincerity and message lift the whole thing up for me and soften some of the harsher things I'd normally think about it. Don't know how often I'd revisit it, but I'd give it a 6/10 which is way better than I had anticipated giving it when I hit play.

 

Same. I personally felt it belonged in a landfill and that’s where mine went. But if someone else wants to still listen I will not judge

 

I checked out that album but didn't really like it outside of a couple songs. Post-punk isn't really a genre I'm into though.

 

Yeah me neither but I've been trying to explore that genre more lately.

just guessing here but sounds like it could be referring to her partner not being supportive of her career and he wants her in the kitchen making him dinner.
