    So...my CarMax story...

My car up until about 4 PM today was a 2011 Chevy Malibu with 148,000 miles on it. It was in good shape, but was getting up there in miles and I’d had a couple issues with the suspension and I really didn’t want to put any more money into it. So a couple weeks back I started looking online for a new vehicle. My wife and I got a van back at the end of last year and we got it through CarMax and were happy with the process, so that’s what I did this time.

I was happy with my Malibu so I searched to see what Malibus they had available. I found a really nice one in the Philadelphia area (@teebs41 ) that was a 2015 with only 8,000 miles on it. And it was a pretty reasonable price that waa in our price range. It did have a $299 transfer fee which was non-refundable but I was familiar with the car’s specs and there were plenty of pictures. I saw there was no accident history and there were no recalls. At that point I requested a transfer and I talked to a CarMax sales guy before the transfer went through. At that point, it was expected for my car to arrive in about 2 weeks.

A few days after that I brought my Malibu to get appraised (I planned to trade it in and use that for a down payment) and I was pleasantly surprised to get a higher offer than I anticipated. Everything was great. At the end of my appraisal I talked to the sales guy and he said the car was scheduled to deliver by Monday the 2nd, so I made an appointment to pick it up on Tuesday the 3rd. He said if anything changed he’d call me and let me know.

Flash forward to yesterday...I got a call at work in the morning saying the car was ready to pick up!!! I didn’t expect it that early but was happy to hear it. That’s when my sales guy started getting a little absent-minded. He forgot that I had gotten my car appraised already and when we were going through the credit approval process on the phone he made a couple mistakes. Ok, I’ll give anyone the benefit of the doubt. I made an appointment to pick up my new car today at 1 PM (and also to trade in my old one too)

So last night I took the car seats out of my car and completely emptied all my personal items out.

This morning I get a call from the sales guy at 11 asking why I missed my appointment. I told him it was at 1 and he apologized and said he wrote down 10 (it was absolutely at 1). I said that it wasn’t a big deal and I’d see him in a couple hours. I get there at 1 and he’s with his 1 PM appointment (because he screwed up the scheduling) but he said he’d be with my soon and that I was welcome to look at my new car.

It looked exactly like it did in the pictures. It really looked brand new and I was pleased with it...until I opened the door. Before my head was even inside the vehicle my nostrils were filled with the smell of 10,000 old cigarettes. It was a very strong smell and it was really obvious that whoever owned the car had no problem with smoking in it. I don’t smoke, but I really don’t care if other people do and I’m ok if people smoke around me on occasion. Having said that...I really don’t want to make a sizable investment into something that smells like a dirty hotel room. And another main concern of mine was my wife and kids. I don’t think anybody is going to get secondhand smoke from a car, but my wife has bad allergies and I didn’t want my kids exposed to it if I could help it. At the same time, I really wanted a new car!!! I could already envision reinstalling the car seats in my 148,000 mile Malibu and that was depressing.

At that point I called my wife to tell her my dilemma and she said that she wanted to come down to the lot to check it out. I figured I’d go with what she thought (I’m smart that way). She got there about 20 minutes later (with the kids) and she thought it smelled way too smoky. She then asked a manager if we could have a different sales guy. I felt a little bad, but I really wasn’t too pleased with how he’d been doing. He seemed like a nice guy but it’s business, you know?

We asked the new sales guy to show us what else they had on their site. We’ve had good luck with Chevy in the past so we started our search there. We crossed a few models off the list because my manly 6’-6” frame doesn’t fit comfortably in them and we were looking for something relatively low in mileage. One vehicle fit the bill for us...a 2016 Chevy Equinox. My wife had actually looked at those when she was deciding on a new vehicle at the end of last year. We both liked it and I took it for a test drive and there were no issues. My Malibu was already appraised for trade-in and my credit was already approved so it was a pretty smooth process to but it!

So in the end it all worked out ok. I’m sorry this story was so long.

tl;dr I was going to buy a new car but it smelled so I bought a different vehicle

    Probably just B.O.

Good call on not getting the smokey car. I'd have done the same thing. Probably would have insisted on a refund for the transfer fee too if the smell wasn't in the description.
