He is one of the last great filmmakers that can blend pop sensibilities with real artistic merit. There really isn't anyone who has come since Spielberg who could even pretend to the mantle.

Loved this

 

Knew this got great reviews but hadn’t read much on the specific performances so my main takeaway was “holy shit this Mike Faist guy is a movie star”….His performance as Riff is unbelievable. The gun to the head scene and the way he snaps at Tony before the rumble (“You’re breaking my heart with this shit!”) tell you so much about that character in such little screen time.

The only problem was that Faist oozing charisma made it super apparent that Elgort, who was otherwise meh but not awful I guess, is such a charisma vacuum.

Yea saw that on twitter earlier today. Seems pretty ridiculous. She’s the lead actress in a film with 7 noms including best picture. She’s one of the few things I liked about it.

Been catching bits and pieces of this as it's played on HBO. I've never been into the musical, but my girl best friend in MS/HS that I had a huuuuge crush on back then was super into musicals and this was one of her favorites, lots of away messages with lyrics from the songs and such. Through talking to her I got all the deets on the 61 version and etc. So it was pretty cool to see them give "Somewhere" to Rita Moreno given what I had known about the original.
