This was great

 

Wow this was fantastic

 

this was so so so so so so dope

 

Loved this.

WSS' been a part of my life for many years (performed in community productions of/played drums in the orchestra/etc.) and this was so on point for how I've always envisioned West Side Story should be. Gritty, bloody, dusty and dark where it needs to be. The songs are so fucking ace. Mike Faist as Riff was so insanely good.

 

I’m watching the original WSS for the first time and this shit is absolutely incredible. I can easily see why it swept up so many Oscars. Tomorrow my fiancée and I are seeing the Spielberg one on the big screen and I am beyond excited.

 

I feel like West Side Story is the kind of thing that a lot of adult children will take their parents to see while they are in town for the holidays. It is still a bomb but hopefully it has enough reach so that we get another movie for adults in theaters.

 

this is a really wonderful movie, haven’t been able to get images from it out of my head since i watched

 

the puddle, the gym, the look of demolished gentrifying upper west side new york, the mirrors, rachel zegler appearing in the lighted window surrounded by a maze of fire escapes, rita moreno singing “somewhere” somberly at the table, etc. etc. etc. total grandeur

 

Yeah everything about the production design in this was unbelievably good.

Having the movie emphasize that the forces of gentrification were already taking over the land these gangs are fighting over, rendering their conflict completely pointless, was also a great touch. Really all of the improvements Kushner made to the story were stellar.

 

This was a good time. Much better than I expected, but I suppose I should have given Spielberg the benefit of the doubt. I might go back and watch the original to see what was changed.

This did nothing to convince me Ansel Elgort is a good actor though. Between this and Baby Driver, he's not great at selling the love at first sight trope. Loved pretty much everyone else in the cast.

 

Echoing the love for the production design. I loved the opening shot and slowly showing a wrecking ball looming over the what's left of a ruined landscape.

I loved this. Rachel Zegler did a great job.
