Hurley has several good songs, but also just feels so bland as an album. It's only 10 tracks, but it feels like a chore to listen to. I think it was only as well-received as it was at the time because it was this weird plastic rehash of the band pre-Make Believe
If the album is finished and music reviewers have heard it, hopefully a leak is on the horizon sooner rather than later.
I might be in the minority here, but I can’t get into Hurley and I don’t get the hate for Make Believe. Flawed, yeah, but it’s also got some great songs “Perfect Situation” through “Peace” is an awesome run. (Quickly muted by “we are all on drugs” though).
Make Believe and Hurley both suffer from the same problem. They are lifeless. I can’t make it through either of them. I usually give the nod to Make Believe because I like “Perfect Situation” and think “Beverly Hills” does a great job being a good song disguised as a bad song. Hurley has nothing for me, just diminishing returns.
Make Believe is definitely the better album imo, it has "Perfect Situation," "This is Such a Pity," "Hold Me," and "Haunt You Every Day," while the best tracks on Hurley feel soulless
Agree. Nothing on Hurley is offensively terrible, it's just, there. Make Believe is basically the same, although songs like Perfect Situation, Peace and Haunt You Every Day make the album more of a standout. I will never understand the love for This is Such a Pity, though. I can't stand that song lol
My Best Friend is easily the low-point of Make Believe. Everything else ranges from tolerable to actually very good. I don't mind Beverly Hills that much, and I'd be much cooler with We Are All On Drugs if it didn't have the diarrhea song verses, it's pretty decent besides that.
For me, Hurley is the most boring album this band have released. It isn't the worst IMO, but it's the most 5/10 middle of the road release and for me, that is more of an offence. I actually prefer this band to be trying and failing than being generic and average. Plus Rivers being utterly bonkers is hugely entertaining.
Also Beverley Hills is a song I would normally hate but it's just so catchy, and in the verses Rivers still amuses me.
I never see "Freak Me Out" mentioned, that's a chill little tune. and I highly relate to the subject matter of being scared by a spider
I go back to the good Hurley songs pretty often. I pretty much never listen to anything off of Make Believe. I don't even known why I have it downloaded on my phone honestly lol
Make Believe was the first Weezer album I listened to (I was in 5th grade) so I can't help but love both singles
