I do love Weezer but I feel like they and their fans at times make them out to be something they are not…they are a pop rock band (one of the top ones at that) but to me outside of Ok Human every other song in their discography post Pinkerton can be interchangeable and placed on any other album…this whole Szns roll out and production was a mess…Broadway shows with tickets over 100 bucks? No thanks…I do appreciate the effort in creativity but definitely not who they are
I will say that SZNZ is the first time Weezer actually confounded me. I went through Raditude, Hurley, Black, etc., but the EPs had me rethinking if I was even a fan haha
SZNZ didn’t really do much for me, honestly. It was one of those things where after one I listen I thought “that’s cool” but didn’t feel the need to come back around to it
I still love Can't Dance, Run Raven and a couple of others but yeah a lot of it was bad unfortunately
For me, SZNZ had portions of songs I thought were great but something was off with how they all came together. It ultimately felt non-cannon to me, like when an artist does a “write and record song a day” exercise and releases 30 quick songs in a month on Bandcamp. I know a lot of things were old demos at one point, but it just didn’t feel like the songs went through their usual writing and editing and refining process outside a small handful.
Have to resist ranking lol Winter is probably in my tier with Green and EWBAITE. Below Blue, Pinkerton, Maladroit, White, OK Human The other three SZNS have about the same hit rate as the Make Believe - Raditude dark ages
I had to google it lol but Autumn is definitely the one I lean towards the most. those two I mentioned above plus Francesca, that's easily the highest hit rate of Great Songs on a SZNZ for me Dark Enough to See the Stars from Winter does get stuck in my head an inordinate amount though
Of all the Album 5 demos, I do feel like "Private Message" is the one that could have genuinely been a hit. Such a great chorus.
that one isn’t my absolute favorite but I love that batch of songs. Def have said this before but I would have loved to see them hold off on releasing maladroit and then have one 10-12 track album of the best of the 2001-2003 stuff. What we got was good but there is a ridiculous record in there if done right.
Downloading every new version of each demo and organizing them in iTunes was such an experience. I'd need to listen back, but considering how wide the range of sounds and moods they were covering with those demos it's hard to think about how a lot of these would fit together cohesively on an album. Off the top of my head I would have loved true versions of: Private Message Sacrifice Mansion of Cardboard She Who Is Militant Prodigy Lover Queen of Earth (maybe in a more grimey, Pinkerton style) Not in that specific batch of demos but a true version of Broken Arrows would be amazing too.
I’ve been meaning to ask. What is the general consensus on which Alkaline Trio albums albums are good and which are not good? I’ve never really listened to whole albums, but I’ve enjoyed songs from several of their records, and I identify that they vary a bit in sound, but I never followed along as to which sounds are considered peak, and which are considered to be less well received.
Peak would probably be Goddamnit straight through to Crimson. Maybe I'll Catch Fire is a bit of a weak point though, though I still love it. Agony & Irony/This Addiction/My Shame Is True are good but the highs are largely around Dan's songs. Then the last 2 albums go above that 3 run easily.
This is interesting. Apparently Josh Freese is returning to play drums for Weezer on their South American tour this fall and Pat will be on guitar again. Josh’s brother Jason (who tours with Green Day) has been telling fans this https://www.reddit.com/r/weezer/s/etGLiB5eVp
