Black and Pacific Daydream are both fun even if they haven't aged particularly well. You could probably put together a really good Weezer album with the best songs from each.
Ehhh a decent one: Mexican Fender Beach Boys Feels Like Summer High as a Kite Weekend Woman QB Blitz Sweet Mary Living In L.A. Byzantine Any Friend of Diane’s
Byzantine is really the only song from Black that I rate I recognize High as a Kite as a good song, but I’m honestly kind of bored by it. It feels like it goes for a euphoric vibe but feels hollow
Ok I listened to Black today for the first time in a while and the run from Piece of Cake to The Prince is brutal. just soooooo boring
I honestly like "Can't Knock the Hustle," it's the kind of weirdo corny left-tirn for them that low-key works in small doses
I find myself singing Piece of Cake a lot and I don't even remember the last time I listened to that album. just a cute catchy song
I actually really like "Happy Hour" for some reason as well so maybe I just have bad taste lmao I think that album is the closest they've come to doing that modern pop-rock sound well (not including power-pop stuff that actually sounds like Weezer, like Green)
I pretty much actually like Pacific Daydream start to finish despite being underwhelmed with Feels Like Summer as the lead single
I think that’s the real reason people look on that record poorly. To me, it’s super similar to the white album (just with less signature Weezer guitar) so it’s weird that people love one and hate the other
IMO, when Rivers is almost good, it can be more annoying than when he goes full bananas in a non-Weezer direction. There are a lot of SZNZ songs where he tricks you into thinking he’s about to be good Rivers and then he pulls the football away, like a Gen X/millennial pop culture embodiment of the classic mythology trickster trope. Mexican Fender off Pacific is a great example of him fucking with people who want classic guitar Weezer by getting up to the line then gleefully running away.
I think PD is a glimpse into what White Album would be without the producer who kept needling Rivers to make it more Weezer-y.
I saw a tweet or post somewhere from Weezer saying Wednesday (next week), something is being announced regarding Blue Tour...
