So Rivers gets a pass even though it is likely impossible that he didn't know about these accusations?
When the allegations from Weezer fans go out of their way to specify that the allegations are strictly about Brian, I don't see the benefit in speculating about how much Rivers knows. If people don't want to listen to him anymore, they don't have to. That's okay
Not in an accusing sense, but I mean, he’s married to a fan, and has had an incredibly intimate relationship with fans for decades. Which I hope is all cool and refreshing, but a power dynamic is obviously present… this from the Harvard Crimson interview is a lil hmmm THC: Many people found out about your engagement solely through your blog. Why did you choose that medium? RC: I don’t have enough perspective on those posts, yet, but I feel like that was, in a way, me breaking off this long flirtation I’ve had with Weezer fan-girls—“Alright, it’s kinda looking like something’s gonna happen! If you wanna try to stop me, now’s your last chance!” THC: Now, you’re saying you want to break away from Weezer fan-girls, but wasn’t [your fiancée] a Weezer fan-girl? What was she doing at this solo concert back in 1997? RC: Well, I know she was a Weezer fan, and I presume that’s why she was there. Rivers' End | Arts | The Harvard Crimson That said, Rivers has talked about taking advantage of fans in the early years in a way that seems to indicate growth and…I dunno if sensitivity is the right word, but a sensitivity to how power imbalance causes harm.
If one wanted to attack Rivers/Weezer in the same fashion other bands accused of similar inappropriate behaviors revisit the themes and lyrics to Pinkerton as well
I can’t imagine having a problem with him being married to an adult, consenting person regardless if they were a fan or not. Not going down that rabbit hole when there is legitimate behavioral concerns from his bandmate.
I don't have a problem with it, but in this conversation it's relevant that Rivers, venerated in a buncha posts above, has talked about experiences of his own that aren't wholly dissimilar from the information about Brian. Maybe it doesn't raise your eyebrow, maybe it does. There's also the story from River's Edge, which I can only find on some rando site at the moment: It's a tabloidy book, I don't take it as gospel, though I have a vague memory of Rivers telling this story in an interview too. Nor is it evidential per se, but it's a lil sus to disregard 30 years of reddish flags. To say nothing of the power imbalance in these situations. And I don't know what it's worth, but Brian's behavior is so widely known in the LA music scene, it stretches credulity to think the band/management was unaware.
The Pinkerton lyrics are worth attention. I’m not sure they bother me, they’re songs about sex revealing of certain human truths…like I dont take Across The Sea as an endorsement of dating teenage girls so much as a look at desire’s confusion. Im a little sus about “Susanne”, kinda weird to write a love song about your A&R guy’s assistant. And “Jamie” seems like a sweet enough song about your lawyer, but that possessive attitude from “No One Else” creeps in. And i think in general, writing songs about women at your label is suggestive of an immature gaze Shit people have talked about forever
42 minutes of blue, and then go on from there perhaps? Yes please, take my money. 4 tickets best seats please. No lawn for me on this one. Could be one of the last concerts I go to, and I'd be ok with that. Go to the website, and enter email addy. Hopefully its early tickets.
That would be fun. From Wiki: They were placed on Q magazine's list of the "50 Bands to See Before You Die" in 2002. My girls may not like it, but Id enjoy seeing them. Was it 10 AM EST?
