When you have never heard the White album but need to rank it so you Spotify the first half of Thank God for Girls and the intro to Girl We Got a Good Thing.
I know some people who absolutely hate the melody in Good Thing. I don't get it personally but I do think the song is very elevated by the bridge
It’s near the bottom of the list for me on White. Well made. I get why people like it. But not what I dig about Weezer or music in general.
Agree with it that Teal and Hurley deserve to be in the basement. But calling “Make Believe” one of Rivers’s most personal albums is very funny.
Make Believe actually IS one of his most personal albums. Outside of the singles, it's basically about how he's trying to be a better person. Ironically, it's the same type of "confessional" songwriting that the fanbase had wanted him to get back to. However, 2005 Weezer sounded a lot glossier and MOR-ish than 1996 Weezer which obviously frustrated people. For me, it's between that album and Red as their worst as their are some downright awful songs on both of them.
Realized I never updated following the SZNS releases CLASSIC WEEZER: Pinkerton Blue White Green VERY GOOD WEEZER: Everything Will Be Alright in the End OK Human Make Believe Van Weezer Pacific Daydream Maladroit Autumn MIXED BAG WEEZER: Spring Red Black Winter Summer WYD WEEZER?: Raditude BAD, BORING & BLAND WEEZER: Hurley
Goddamnit, now you're making me do an impromptu ranking (Worst to Best): 16) MAKE BELIEVE - Bland adult-contermporary sounding and some super thirsty singles 15) RED - A few good singles, one good experimentation and a lot of drecky songs cementing the idea that Rivers shouldn't let other members of the band contribute songs 14) HURLEY - No distinct personality, feels like a lot of left-overs even if nothing is as obscene as the lows of Red, Make Believe and Raditude 13) RADITUDE - Some of these collaborations are excellent and some are downright embarrassing. The highs are better than the records above 12) DEATH TO FALSE METAL - Grab-bag of leftovers that actually sounds better than a lot of the studio albums released around this time, likely due to the material dating back to the early 00's 11) BLACK - 10 years later after Raditude, Rivers is able to more tastefully try to fit into the modern landscape 10) SZNZ - A cool magnum opus released in several parts that is overall more consistent than a lot of their records though the stylistic differences can be a little hard to pinpoint 09) PACIFIC DAYDREAM - Nice continuation from White with more modern pop flourishes and only 1-2 embarrasing songs 08) MALADROIT - Written during Rivers most indulgent years, was a nice way to shoot Weezer's power-pop through a 70's arena rock template 07) VAN WEEZER - Does what Maladroit probably intended to do with a much more concise focus, bigger hooks and more fun 06) EVERYTHING WILL BE ALRIGHT IN THE END - Typical "back to basics" album that 90's bands are required to do at some point that also secretly allows Rivers to indulge in more operatic/orchestra-based rock. 05) OK HUMAN - Total left-field album but finally allowed Rivers to show people that, yes, he is NOT being ironic as these are some of his most beautiful and honest songs ever 04) WHITE ALBUM - Nice and breezy beach album, Jake Sinclair really helped guide them on this 03) GREEN ALBUM - Punchy, to the point with not an ounce of fat, it may be extremely cold, calculated and emotionless but still an all around pleasure to listen to 02) PINKERTON - Too much has been written about this album but it's still an excellent example of mid-90's freakouts by established bands 01) BLUE ALBUM - An all around classic that has not fallen out of favor in nearly 30 years. Songs still hold up today and I imagine they'll hold up 30 years from now.
I appreciate the sentiment and Rivers' quest to be a better person but just did not really connect with the material. A lot of mid-tempo stuff that I just didn't enjoy but glad other people like it.
PERFECT: Blue Pinkerton GREAT: Maladroit White OK Human EWBAITE SZNS: Winter Green GREAT BUT HAVE TO BE IN THE MOOD: SZNS: Autumn Van Weezer SOLID ENOUGH TO LISTEN IN FULL: Black Pacific Daydream SZNS: Summer CAN'T BRING MYSELF TO LISTEN IN FULL: Hurley Red (Bonus tracks keep it from the next tier down) Make Believe TWO TO THREE GOOD SONGS: SZNS: Spring Raditude REAL WEEZER FANS WOULD NEVER RANK: Death To False Metal Teal
To be clear, I'm not gatekeeping haha. It's just all note for note covers and No Scrubs is the only remotely interesting cover to me, but I do listen to it. Just don't feel like the cover and b-sides albums fit The SPIN writer really just made me write that out of spite lol.
Blue White OK Human Pinkerton SZNZ Pacific Daydream Green EWBAITE Maladroit Van Weezer Black Raditude Make Believe Hurley Red
This is just so funny and so Rivers. Rivers posted a reply on this post and starts with "Rivers Cuomo from Weezer here" from the account "rivers_cuomo" haha he's amazing
