1. Can’t Dance, Don’t Ask Me 2. Blue Like Jazz 3. Get Off On The Pain 4. The Deep and Dreamless Sleep 5. Dark Enough to See the Stars 6. Thank You and Good Night 7. I Want a Dog 8. A Little Bit of Love 9. Basketball 10. Run, Raven, Run And I also don’t get the hate for Records. It’s fun!
I made a playlist of 17, so on a song basis it was a success to me. As others have said though conceptually, it's like a D- grade, the Spring EP sounded like Spring, the rest were all basically interchangeable. So yeah I would have liked to see a version of this that nailed the seasons concept but overall not disappointed. The hit rate of 28 Rivers songs in a year was way better than I'd have hoped for
Ok I just went through and picked a top 10 (chronological not ranked). Harder than I expected 1. A Little Bit of Love 2. All This Love 3. Lawn Chair 4. Records 5. The Opposite of Me 6. Can't Dance, Don't Ask Me 7. Francesca 8. Should She Stay or Should She Go 9. Run, Raven, Run 10. The One That Got Away
This is kind of where I’m at too. I don’t get the hate. Compared to Red, Hurley and Raditude, this is a solid effort, even with a few clunkers. It doesn’t hit the highs of white or ewbaite or others in the new weezer era, but it’s by no means bad or unlistenable
I’ve listened to Winter a lot this past week, easily my favorite. Looking forward to listening to all 4 in order after the holidays and making a definitive playlist, but as of now I’m ranking them as: winter > summer > autumn > spring
This list isn’t based on what songs I enjoy the most (or can tolerate the most) but rather which songs feel fleshed out enough to be on a proper modern Weezer full length. A lot of songs I “like” the most from this SZNZ set are still sketches of song ideas Frankensteined together or they sound like their usual Blue/Pinkerton-ish b-sides that don’t really fit anywhere on their albums.
"What Happens After You" also insane to include in your top 10, rivals "A Little Bit of Love" for the lowest of the low
funnily enough "Little Bit" is significantly better than the song they actually wrote for the Shrek soundtrack! "My Best Friend", an all-time stinker about as bad as "Basketball" ... seriously I love how often the Weezer thread just devolves into us arguing what their all-time worst are, and we can't eve agree on that. only this band lmao, only Weezer
If we wanna talk about bad I randomly tried to give Death To False Metal a listen yesterday. It's so abysmal
"A Little Bit of Love" is fine, yes it's corny but so is a lot of their output over the last 15 years. In the context of these EPs it's easily top 10. Honestly I had a hard time coming up with 10 tracks I felt strongly about haha. And I think "What Happens After You" might be my single favorite song from this whole project. Not sure what the knock on that one is, it's a banger IMHO.
Those two songs and Records are not good but they’re fully developed bad/corny Weezer singles. I could only find 6 other tracks across the 4 EPs that also sounded fleshed out enough to be on a proper Weezer album. The rest sound like polished early demos, b-sides, and one-offs.
I don’t understand not feeling like these songs are fully fleshed out lol. They’re way more fleshed out than a lot of things on Weezer albums from the 2000’s onwards. Just because there are different movements and experimental structures? Because that was intentional, I wouldn’t call that Frankensteined. Just Rivers trying something different. I’m a big fan of it personally.
