Was going down a YouTube rabbit hole last night and this song popped up and I had forgotten about it, and I read a story in the comments about how the band asked rivers Cuomo how to write a catchy song that gets on the radio and etc, and so he wrote this song and gave it to them, and…damn does it make so much sense now.
@David87 Holy shit you just blew my mind. I totally know this song from back in the day, but I had NO IDEA Rivers wrote the verses and guitar part, wtf. But yes, listening back to it now, you totally can hear Rivers' writing style
Lol this happened to me two weeks ago. I've always known Rivers wrote that song, that album actually held up better than I thought it would when I listened to it. I forgot Limp Bizkit really pushed that band
Back when that song came out there was a message board war between Cold and Weezer fans. Weird times.
Okay, so... I feel a strong need to help clarify some of this. The below interview helps spell it out, but long story short is that Ward had written the music for the song already and had writer's block on the lyrics. Because Rivers was already an acquaintance by this time, and since it had been commented that the riff was reminiscent of Weezer, someone suggested getting Rivers' input. And so Rivers helped write the lyrics and melody for the song. So it wasn't that Cold had Weezer write a catchy song for them. That's just false. It would be cool if he had the other members write all of the instrumentals and once those were complete he came up with lyrics and melody.
In a just world, the inspiration band he hints at would be Ozma and the now-grown Ozma kids would write Yellow as a spiritual sequel to Doubble Donkey. In this world, the band is probably something like Fritz and the Tantrums and the album is being written by Butch Walker’s cousin and Rivers under a secret identity.
I was at a record store yesterday and heard: "Oh my god! They have the Blue Album! Oh wait. This is the wrong Blue Album." Got a hearty chuckle out of that. I'm assuming it was Teal but didn't care to look.
