Okay so first five tracks are pre-release, I really love "Feels Like Summer" and "Happy Hour," "Weekend Woman" is good, "Mexican Fender" and "Beach Boys" are varying levels of okay. Strangely enough, "QB Blitz" is an ultra-pleasant acoustic track haha super catchy melody on this one "Sweet Mary" is another primarily acoustic track? Sequencing is a little strange, this one's a little more somber but really epic sounding harmonies, huge Beach Boys vibes
"Get Right" is another downbeat indie-pop track in a similar vein as "Beach Boys." It's fine but definitely one of the weaker tracks. There's a line about wearing alligator shoes. "La Mancha Screwjob" is similar, somewhere between "Beach Boys" and "Feels Like Summer." Great pre-chorus, not a great chorus. Pretty standard indie-pop. Working with Fitz and the Tantrums definitely had an impact on this record and I guess that could be good or bad depending what you're into
Okay he namedrops Papa John's like 10 seconds into the closer. Second half of this record does not exactly fare well
Yeah, so first impression, "Feels Like Summer" through "Sweet Mary" is a great run and would've been a perfect EP, but the other half of this is definitely pandering to college radio with varying levels of success. I'm listening back to the last three tracks now because they definitely seemed the most half-baked. The closer was fine instrumentally, but the lyrics were...rough. I feel like Weezer is one of those bands whose weaknesses are also what makes them stand out (Rivers' lyrics, for example). I can usually find something endearing about their records, and occasionally that spark is here, but the songs that fully submit to generic indie-pop really kills anything that keeps this band interesting
That's probably a good thing, haha, you might enjoy it more that way. Don't want to rank it after one listen or anything but it's nowhere near as bad as Raditude. I might even like it more than Hurley. Seems most comparable to Make Believe or Red Album on first listen
After Happy Hour, I definitely get the feeling of this album by now, which is fine but definitely seems like a lesser album from them. Such a strange band, so inconsistent forever and always
I didn’t make the Fitz and the Tantrums connection before but that totally makes sense based on these singles
