I agree with this and I'm tempted to chalk it up to them finally not "trying" so hard just doing what comes natural to them at this point in their career. There's always been a pop element to Rivers' songwriting, but Raditude and Hurley both felt so forced for what they were trying to do. EWBAITE felt like a much more genuine return to form than the latter, and there's no doubt that this album is building from certain aspects of The White Album, so maybe this will be their genuine take on a pop record. Tbh, that's also what I find slightly charming about Make Believe. Some of those songs are silly and seemingly vapid, but given Rivers' mindset at the time, I think it's more authentic than a number of Weezer albums and Rivers' willingness to try new things is admirable at the very least.
This always seems to be the arguement people make. And that's fine, it's a job at the end of the day. He should make money to provide for his family. I get that. But when the seems Show in the music......I tune out. As I said though, I don't hate this. Not a huge fan and this will get infinite more plays from me than their middling stuff.
Question is this. If White album isn't received as well as it was is this album called "Pacific Daydream"? Probably not.
If it was any of my other fave bands I'd be conflicted too, but I feel like if we got another "classic Weezer" sounding record that would actually be Rivers not being true to himself or whatever. He wants to write the perfect pop song. That's been his journey all along.
Maybe not, but the real question is, how much does that matter? If fans want Weezer to stay true to themselves, and Weezer's true goal is to blend pop aspiration with what their fans like most about them, is an album that does just that still considered "opportunistic?" The path to this album, especially considering the existence of The Black Album, begs a lot of questions, some of which might become more clear once we hear the album in full. But again, that's why I find this band so much more interesting than most others do. Given Rivers' history with honesty and critical reception, I am consistently fascinated by the decisions made by this band and the motives behind them
Definitely not as aggressively bad as this thread made me think it would be, but it's definitely not great. Feels lazy honestly, like Rivers doesn't believe what he is singing
cooler than the Ice Capades is definitely a Rivers lyric also there are songs called QB Blitz and La Mancha Screwjob on this and I can't wait to hear those and the released songs are the first 3 on the album
Rivers you're so fucking weird Makin my eyes get moist? Ugh Thanks for the White album though. It was beautiful
This might be one of the worst choruses Rivers has ever written. Even the worst Weezer songs are at least catchy but this one doesn't even have that going for it. I'm glad they said they have the Black Album coming up next year which they put more effort into because this album may end up being a bust for me
1st of all...I LOVE this groovy bassline! If you don't have some sort of reggae/ska background you won't feel it! Production rules! Them reverb-ed guitar layers and that sick distorted-over-compressed vocal effect in verses Fav. part at 1:29 when Rivers is singing with reggae technique "if you know the notes siiiiiiiing from your heart" (that line reminded me of RX Bandits) and then these old school Sublime synth sounds come in at 1:45.. magic! Respect for experimenting with new musical styles and for making this lil tribute to my all time fav. band BB. 3 on 3 for me so far 1. Mexican Fender 2. Beach Boys 3. Feels Like Summer
I really don't like Mexican Fender and I think Feels Like Summer is mediocre, so I guess this is my favorite single so far? That doesn't bode well for this album
This song is definitly NOT like Sublime or RX Bandits, and "having a reggae/ska background," whatever that is supposed to mean, does not make the song any better
