(This is not a knock against Maladroit,) but even with Keep Fishin', Beverly Hills, and Africa, they are not a relevant band (or even a band at all) in 2021 if you eliminated the first 3 records. Blue, Pinkerton, and Island in the Sun do some HEAVY lifting for their continued commercial viability.
If you like Pinkerton, this isn’t true. This is Weezer history 101 - the bad reviews to Pinkerton forever changed how Rivers wrote. The bad reviews to Pinkerton, which people now say is perfect. Also if you don’t think the band has been good since Pinkerton or whatever, why are you in a Weezer thread? You think the band sucks. Cool.
I think Maladroit might be better than Blue. I like Green, I like Red (apparently), I like Hurley and White. I can also say that the band makes bad music when I think they make bad music.
Blue is the only Weezer album to be universally praised Pinkerton was mixed at best but I think it was how critics wrote about the album is what bummed out Rivers Green got great reviews from almost every outlet but Pitchfork (but 2001 was prime shit heel reviewing years for that site) and NME
honestly the band started getting more mixed reviews from bigger outlets starting with Make Believe (Rolling Stone gave it a 4/5 tho lol)
I mean let's get real nerdy (this is a weezer thread after all) meta critic consensus there is no data for Blue but it had great scores Pinkerton: then the Metacritic consensus for the rest: Green - 73/100 on 15 reviews Maladroit - 72/100 on 21 reviews Make Believe - 52/100 on 25 reviews Red - 64/100 on 32 reviews Raditude - 57/100 on 25 reviews Hurley - 68/100 on 28 reviews Everything Will Be Alright in the End - 77/100 on 33 reviews White - 71/100 on 29 reviews Pacific Daydream - 64/100 on 23 reviews Black - 53/100 on 20 reviews OK Human - 74/100 on 12 reviews
FWIW, White and PD were also nominated for Grammys for Best Rock Album. I would say that everything since EWBAITE have been pretty well received by fans and critics (outside of Black)
I know no one is asking for this input, but I want it fully known that Beverly Hills was my first Weezer song. I was in sixth grade then and I thought it fucking slapped. I’m 28 now and I still think it fucking slaps. In line with the theme of this thread, this is a hill I am willing to die on.
Blue White Pink Ok Human Pacific Daydream Everything Will Be Alright Maladroit Black Red Green Make Believe Raditude Hurley
I'm loving this more and more. I try to just listen to one or two tracks and end up playing the whole album, then I end up starting it all over again. Haven't been this excited about an album in years
Listening to ewbaite voice memos i just realized the b melody in the Summer Elaine & Drunk Dori verse is the melody from Ain’t Got Nobody
who is moving a goalpost? i said, in my original post, that the album had fine reviews when released, and retroactively got very positive reviews. which.... is what you went on to confirm happened, by pitchfork giving them a 10... over 15 years after the album was released? like, what?
My biggest issue with Pitchfork currently is they still refuse to acknowledge Meg Myers' existence haha.
