I can't even begin to try and make a list....I'm very fond of my childhood tastes haha and I love everything the 90s has to offer. But first off the top of my head include Clueless, Titanic, Homeward Bound, Scream, and of course all Disney movies.
Top 5 I remember watching as a kid in the 90s: Hook, Free Willy, The Little Rascals, The Mighty Ducks and D2: The Mighty Ducks.
So many good titles guys ;D yesterday they aired American Pie on TV so I watched it again with my girlfriend, it's not very deep, but it's pretty nostalgic, it was great to hear all those songs.
I feel like the biggest dick for leaving out Free Willy and Hook. 2 of my favorite movies of all time
Many of my favorite filmmakers put out some of their strongest work in the 90s: Tarantino (Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown), Coens (Fargo, Barton Fink, the Big Lebowski), Linklater (Dazed and Confused, Slacker, Before Sunrise, SubUrbia), PTA (Boogie Nights, Magnolia), Paul Verhoeven (Showgirls, Starship Troopers, Total Recall), Spielberg (Jurassic Park, Schindler's List), Spike Lee (Malcolm X), Wes Anderson (Bottle Rocket, Rushmore), Kevin Smith (Clerks, Chasing Amy, I even like Dogma). Then there are master filmmakers whom either only put out one film in the 90s, or I've only seen one of their 90s films, or only one of their 90s films are worth mentioning: Spike Jonze/Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich), Edward Yang's A Brighter Summer Day, Chantal Akerman's From the East, Sodebergh's Out of Sight, Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut, Scorsese's Goodfellas and Malick's the Thin Red Line. Outside of the independent scene explosion I actually think the 90s were really weak in mainstream movies, few of the big blockbusters had anything substantial to say when put up against a Verhoeven or Spielberg, but I have a few favorites in Terminator 2, the Sandlot, the Toy Story films, There's Something About Mary, Three Kings, Election, Princess Mononoke, Kicking and Screaming, the Hunchback of Notre Dame, Kids, the Iron Giant, Se7en, Office Space, True Romance, Hoop Dreams, Unforgiven, Glengarry Glen Ross, and Titanic. I spent a lot of the 90s watching kids movies or dumb comedies, I'm sure most of them don't hold up well (I'll defend the Sandlot, however). I liked Adam Sandler fare there was a boom of kid-centric sports movies in the decade. Little Big League, Rookie of the Year, Little Giants, Angels in the Outfield, the Mighty Ducks. Rather than insist they're good and hold up, though, I'll let them live in the 90s, where as a kid I quite enjoyed them. Oh, and a Goofy Movie was pretty dope.
Wholly agree on the action front (though not necessarily with all the films you chose) but I would say it was pretty much downhill for how most action films and how action in any genre of film was shot by the time the early 2000's rolled by. Only have to look at how well filmed the action scenes in a pair of films that weren't action films in say Titanic and the pyroclastic flow scene in Dante's Peak were filmed with long shots and practical effects, today they would be edited and made just like you stated.
