Really enjoyed this movie, especially the ending. Loved the tension and there were a few parts where I jumped in my seat. Also I could be paraphrasing the quote but, “Look at what they did to the yard!” had my whole theatre laughing
At one point I was asking myself if I was actually enjoying it and then the next moment I literally wanted to jump up and yell at the screen (complimentary)
Yeah same near the middle I felt it lagging, but I think the drug addict portion is when it really kicks back into full gear
The first couple of stories felt like some well-worn territory. Like, very “Sharp Objects.” I was afraid the hype train failed me. But yeah, Brolin kind of teed it up and the addict really kicked it into gear. Also, the cinematography and editing for Alex’s story - Man, I really felt like Cregger showed a lot of growth from “Barbarian” to this. If anything, I wish the ending was a couple minutes longer because I felt like it had some more explaining. But that’s minor quibbling. I loved this.
shoutout to Alex for being like the only sympathetic person in this movie and solving the whole plot by himself. actually yeah it feels like he would've done what he did either way so I guess all the stuff with Brolin and Garner figuring it out and going to the house didn't really matter lol
Actually I think it's funny that the cop was the only legitimately shitty character lol. Everyone else had underlying reasons/trauma for the choices they made, but the cop just lied to Justine to sleep with her while actively disliking his current girlfriend and not letting her know it. And then of course coupled with the body cam cover up, having the recovering alcoholic angle helped give him more depth but he was actually shitty in general.
Sad that Benedict Wong and his partner didn’t get to enjoy their 6 hot dog lunch. EDIT: 7 hot dog lunch
those hotdogs looked great too goddamn you Gladys if nothing else I really liked the designs and the steps that went into the witchy stuff in this. huge week for bells with creepy lil symbols on em in horror!
Yeah this is one of those things from the trailer that wound up being a huge spoiler because I realized as we were approaching the end that this moment with his parents still hadn’t happened yet and it was very clear by that point that it was going to be an intentional act on his part to undermine aunt Gladys. That kid did a great job in his role.
it's odd that it felt like the first trailer was trying to cover up Alex's existence entirely only for him to basically be the only character who actually did anything lol? I don't wanna harp on it too much and take over the thread but seriously why did we spend all this time with Justine if her only contribution by the end was to nearly get choked out by three different guys? why did the witch even bother sending her shooters after Justine when she was pretty much useless and if anything the Marcus attack in broad daylight made it way more likely that she'd get discovered? again I'm happy for people enjoying this but a lot like Barbarian I feel like there was a great 30-minute short film in here and the rest was just padding
today's the anniversary of trevor's death and i'm very glad that i decided to take a chance and see this today. him and zach's work with WKUK has and always will mean a lot to me and i'm glad that zach felt comfortable enough sharing this body of work that clearly meant a lot to him, especially on today of all days. had a really great time with this. glad i went in blind. very overwhelming experience for all of the right reasons imo.
I guess for me regardless of the destination everyone still has their own journey to go on and it can still be enjoyable? Which sounds cheesy to say but yea I dunno, I just don't look at it as pessimistically I guess
Man, I’m actually pretty disappointed by this. It’s a good movie, but way overhyped (I’m gonna include myself in that blame ), and not as well executed as Barbarian. there’s so much build-up, with a good chunk of it in the middle that felt really dull, and ultimately didn’t lead to a satisfying conclusion for most of the characters. the climactic set piece was super entertaining, but it just ended very suddenly after that, without even acknowledging what I could consider the main character (Julia) at all. It just didn’t justify the buildup, especially for the cop and the drug addict. I also didn’t find it scary except for a couple little moments earlier on. hate to be so negative but that’s how I’m feelin
I get it for sure lol just wish I enjoyed those journeys more haha, I was hooked at the start but by the time the cop segment came around it started losing me pretty hard
There were definitely things here that Cregger probably didn’t want us to focus on too much because hey, she’s a witch and it’s magic so don’t think too hard about her reasoning but I do think those motivations are a lot more interesting when viewed through the lens of not just a school shooter allegory, but a right wing indoctrination allegory and how it weaponizes children and turns people not just against each other, but specifically against educators and intellectualism. They attack Justine because she’s an educator reaching out to a frightened young boy, which could potentially pull him back from the misinformed, violent, right wing pipeline and so she’s a threat to “the plan” and must be eliminated. She could infect him with love and compassion as well as, and more importantly, the truth. So Gladys as the right wing indoctrinator uses fear as the motivator for Alex, which works for a while, until she realizes all too late that he’s seen right through her and used her own malice against her. And that leads the rest of the kids to fight back and tear apart the apparatus that has stolen their lives.[\spoiler] And I like that reading of it, but it takes a bit to get there.
And all the mystery of “what’s it gonna be about !!” to just be such a simple classic horror trope also didn’t help. I was expecting something darker & more original I guess
It is definitely spooky, but also funny and I don't think the kids really get terrorized or fucked up in a traditional sense so you're probably good on that front Wow, I did not realize that was her Also, Whitmer Thomas!! Loooove this take.
Yeah, really loved this. Barbarian is good but it feels like Cregger made a real film's film here. Way funnier and more well-rounded as a whole than I was expecting, more than a traditional horror flick. It really does feel like he Magnolia-fied The Blair Witch Project and made it way more violent lol. Third act was so fun to see with a crowd. The music and cinematography were excellent. Pretty easily my favorite of the year so far
