I think the setup/structure of Barbarian is much more unique/interesting than this. Frankly, I don't think this needed the chapter/title card stuff and I'm not sure what it added to the final project aside from being an homage to films that did it better.
It's better in my opinion as it's more expansive and has a larger cast of characters. It's similar in that it mashes together several tones, and has an atypical structure. I can't imagine liking one and not the other but it could go both ways where I could see someone hating both.
Better overall movie than Barbarian due to it being more cohesive and less clunky, which I note as sometimes horror fans are really forgiving of overall quality and cohesiveness in favor of specific freaky/crazy moments. So, I can see someone liking Barbarian more as that might have more crazy wtf peak moments.
I’m definitely a just enjoy the movie guy but at the same time I like to nitpick and poke fun at things. And in this one there really isn’t anything that makes me want to nitpick. The more something didn’t make sense the more I’m just like yeah cool this works. Love the gun over the house. Any other movie I’d probably hate it.
Dynamite is mostly bad. The first act is good and then it nosedives from there. Some good acting, some awful acting and it’s not very entertaining outside of the first act.
Weirdly House of Dynamite and Weapons have some overlap considering the structure of both. Except House of Dynamite sucks and does it really bad and Weapons rocks
Barbarian has improved for me on each rewatch, so I'd probably put it on par with this even if this felt more immediate. I like the Magnolia setup a lot here, but it definitely feels pretty shameless. Especially paired with Alden's character.
I liked the chapter format for this movie. It didn’t reinvent it or do anything unique with the format but I don’t think the film is as fun without it.
