It’s good to think about things. Some of the discussion of this movie in this thread was insufferable though.

So I totally thought I was quoting a Tool song and was perturbed when I couldn't find it, and then I realized I was actually quoting the song Figure 8 by the short-lived band Memento. Great song IMO but not one most people here would be familiar with.

I have been seeing this on reddit too and it's just an exhausting circle.

    1) The 'it's a movie!! turn off your brain and don't think about it!' is such a lame response, and unless you literally have never had a question about a movie ever, it's just a deflection and means 'I don't want to engage in any criticism about something i like'.

    BUT

    2) It's a horror movie and if every horror writer adhered to 100% real world logic, or had to have an explanation for everything or else they didn't proceed, we'd be robbed of so many creative stories.

IMO - this was still the best fun I had in theaters all year, but I still have some issues some of the story logic.

This was good. This was way different than I was expecting. I loved the character focused vignette structure. I was initially disappointed when the mystery was resolved it was just witchcraft, but those feelings have faded. They way her “spells” are explained is just such a wonderful example of trusting the audience to figure out the details without tedious exposition. Ultimately, it’s a fun ride with something to say as well without hitting the audience over the head with the message (save for the AR-15 dream sequence).

  12. I love the floating AR-15. There's no other real connection to the story, so I don't think it's hitting anyone over the head. Just surreal and haunting imagery.

The only story part I didn't like is why Gladys was in peoples dreams. It seemed counterintuitive to her goals of you know, getting away with it, to broadcast that she was at the heart of it to people. I felt that was a bit of a weak link that was underbaked / underexplained story wise but it also generated some of the scariest moments so I just accepted it in the end. I have only watched it once (will do a 2nd watch very soon) so maybe I missed some clues as to why that was happening or maybe it just boils down to horror movie logic and doing what's scary.

I also don't really know exactly what the AR-15 was meant to symbolize in the context of the themes of the movie besides the very obvious title tie in. It's already been discussed by Zach that it wasn't meant to read as a direct allegory to school shootings (and if you try to read it that way I think it falls apart), so the direct inclusion of that imagery, along with the time of 217, just makes it a little on the nose / borderline goofy in my opinion. Definitely took me out of it for a brief moment when it was revealed.

I do genuinely think I enjoyed the other movie horror / thriller Zach Cregger was tied to this year a bit more - Companion. Highly recommend that to everyone in here who hasn't seen it. Go in blind and enjoy the ride.

I don’t know that she was like “I’m gonna go in their dreams and scare ‘em.” I think the idea was more of the basic general “we are more connected to the supernatural in our dreams” and they were sensing her presence.

I think they were trying to connect with the missing kids and she interrupted that because she was controlling those kids. So subconsciously she was blocking any connection to the kids.

Fair. It'll be something I'm paying attention to on my rewatch. My wife doesn't like 'scary' movies but she's okay with gore and thrillers. I'm going out on a limb and telling her it's not that scary and so I think she's finally gonna watch it with me.

I genuinely thought outside of a few jump scares and the end of act 1, that it wasn't too scary (disturbing, gory etc sure but it wasn't an unrelenting scarefest).

Outside of the pretty sad depictions of the kid’s adjusted life and loss of his parents, the rest of the movie is def more on the fun “oh no!/I can’t believe this is happening” laughing more than being frightened. It also ends in such a cathartic way that I feel like you’d walk away not bummed and depleted like after some horror movies. I would watch it with her.
