Finally saw this last night and loved it. Liked the unreliable narration where conversations were different depending on perspective. Loved the achronological approach to storytelling. Very satisfied by the build up and ending in a way I haven't been with a lot of films recently.
I don't think the Oscars chances for this are high (except maybe for Amy Madigan) but I would love for this to secure a Best Original Screenplay nomination. IMO it's the most deserving movie I've seen thus far this year.
Watched tonight at my buddy’s house, loved it. This was so damn good and fun to watch, I went in completely blind to the story and I loved how it ended up. Hopefully they don’t bother doing that prequel movie, it works better the less you explain what’s up with Gladys.
I’ve thought a lot about this since I saw it. Definitely think the ulterior theme of the movie is Zack not only mourning Trevor but also how deeply hurt he was that his best friend’s death was alcohol related and it took his friend like how it took his childhood away from him. It’s also interesting how it shined this light on how communities react to tragic situations involving children, like the irrationality and boogeymen seeking that people do while also unintentionally disregarding the children and putting their own concerns up front while the kids take a backseat. There’s more going on it of course but I love how layered the story is. On a surface level, you can just take it at face value and view it as a supernatural horror movie about a community dealing with a witch. When you start to peel back at the layers however, it honestly enhances the movie and truly adds to the experience imo.
Btw, this just dropped on HBOMax today! I just got home a bit ago from surgery so I’m gonna kick back and watch this again.
Finally watched this last night. This was easily my most anticipated film in years and absolutely loved it.
Watched it this morning (my second time, my wife’s first). She loved it and I borderline think it’s a masterpiece now. In Brolin’s dream when he’s implying to his son that he wish he would have said “I love you” more, to the big, bright jump scare, to “WHAT THE FUCK?!” is 3 big emotions in a quick 1-2-3 punch. It’s a fucking ride in 20 seconds.
Def enjoying this more on rewatch without the weight of expectations. I still think the tone shift Is a bit odd from the first act to the rest of it but it’s better when you know what’s coming.
On second watch, this went from “horror” to offbeat dramedy with a great story for me. Happy with both.
Just watched. Thought it was great. Immediately went to this thread and read several pages to “get some takes”. Some of ya’ll go so bat shit crazy analyzing a movie. Like. Insufferable. Jesus Christ. I’m absolutely a just enjoy things guy. I did think about while watching “oh, cops should probably really check out Alex’s house deeper. Oh well” Good/great movie.
