AMO BRACKET Round 1: i apologize if you feel something Vs. why you gotta kick me when i'm down i don't know what to say Vs. ouch mother tongue Vs. fresh bruises medicine Vs. heavy metal MANTRA Vs. wonderful life
why you gotta kick me when i'm down - I feel bad for doing that to "I apologize..." so early, but I love the hip-hop influences on this one. Plus, that chorus is insane. ouch - okay, y'all, I'm going to make the case that this is the best song on the whole album. It's so different from every other song on the album, hell, Oli doesn't even sing here, but somehow it still emotionally resonates. The lyrics are amazing "This was going to end in tears, didn't think your wrists would keep a souvenir" is one of my favorite lines from any song ever. The drum beat is so urgent, but still matches the chilled-out, lounge vibe of the song. Also, it references "Follow You" in such a great subversion of that song's message. Plus the "na na na na na na"s in the intro are so catchy. This is just a great song, through and through. mother tongue - This is such a good ballad. Poppy, emotional, great production, just a fun song. heavy metal - Honestly 'Medicine' got more boring to me with repeated listens, while this got more exciting. The snarky lyrics, the call and response part, beat-boxing, all make this a unique track. MANTRA - I think this track is super underrated. So is "wonderful life" but this one POPS OFF. The riff is immediately classic, the chorus is so catchy yet aggressive, and the BRIDGE. Oh wow, the bridge is one of my favorite parts of the song, when the electronics build up, and Oli's harsher singing fades into a falsetto. Yes, the lyrics are cheesy, but that's when I think the band's at the top of their game.
I don’t care for most of this record, but I’ll vote anyway for the sake of voting. Kick Ouch Mother Medicine MANTRA (best song on here imo)
Would’ve voted drown very interested to see how this album shakes out why you gotta kick me when i'm down. I like the opener a lot but given their history it’s a little underwhelming and this is just the more fleshed out song. ouch. IDKWTS is possibly my second favorite on the album, and I expect it to win this matchup, but yea I agree with the above in saying this is the best song on the album. Ik it’s weird, it’s short, oli’s not on it, but its disturbingly catchy. Love the instrumentation and lyrics. The recurring problem with crossover albums like this is there’s often inconsistency not just across the album but within individual songs. This song is nice and concise. mother tongue. Easy choice. heavy metal. This was really tough. Medicine is really catchy but a bit generic. Heavy metal is one of the better, more consistent crossover-y songs but I don’t like songs about songs lol vote goes to the more creative one. wonderful life. I don’t think either of these are very good. Vote goes to wonderful life for the better chorus. Please god no more spoken word verses. I can’t believe another person feels this way I’m so stoked haha
why you gotta kick me when i'm down i don't know what to say mother tongue heavy metal wonderful life
why you gotta kick me when i'm down (pretty easy pick for me although i apologise if you feel something is a good intro track) i don't know what to say (another easy pick for me - kind of the same reasoning as the previous matchup, i’m not picking an interlude track over a full song) mother tongue (this wasn’t too difficult for me either - i appreciate the direction they went with fresh bruises, but mother tongue is really catchy and i like the vocals a lot) heavy metal (the first tough one for me this round! i like both songs quite a bit, but i’ll go with heavy metal here because i think it’s the more interesting and less straightforward song of the two) wonderful life (i like MANTRA a lot, but I have to go with wonderful life here - i’ve said it before, but i’m a sucker for their heavier side) ——————— i like this album quite a bit! i had it as #10 on my 2019 year-end list.
Current scores: i apologize if you feel something - 1 why you gotta kick me when i'm down - 8 i don't know what to say - 3 ouch- 6 mother tongue - 8 fresh bruises - 1 medicine - 2 heavy metal - 7 MANTRA - 4 wonderful life - 5
i don't think that's too hot of a take! i think the general consensus is that it's one of the better tracks on the album. saying ouch is the best song on the album though...
Current scores: i apologize if you feel something - 2 why you gotta kick me when i'm down - 8 i don't know what to say - 4 ouch- 6 mother tongue - 9 fresh bruises - 1 medicine - 3 heavy metal - 7 MANTRA - 4 wonderful life - 6
These will be the final scores. Round 2: sugar honey ice & tea Vs. why you gotta kick me when i'm down ouch Vs. mother tongue in the dark Vs. heavy metal nihilist blues Vs. wonderful life
sugar honey ice & tea - Ons of the best songs on the album. Heavy yet poppy at the same time, love the riffage here, and the chorus is infecfious. ouch - This isn't a slight to Mother Tongue, but Ouch cuts way deeper emotionally for me, and once again, the weirder track has to try harder to be better, so this was an easy choice. heavy metal - In The Dark is a bit too Imagine Dragons-y for lack of a better description. Heavy Metal slaps. wonderful life - Nihilist Blues is the only song on the record I actively dislike. And this songs chorus SLAPS. Very dissapointed that MANTRA lost though, I thought that song was one of the best on the record. Probably top 3 with SHI&T & ouch.
why you gotta kick me when i'm down (i like both of these, but this is a little more interesting to me and i think some of the lyrics in sugar honey ice & tea are a bit clunky) mother tongue (easy pick for me - i’m honestly a little shocked to see all the love for ouch here...i don’t hate it, but it’s probably my least favorite track on the album) heavy metal (this is definitely one of my favorite songs on the album - it may be my favorite) wonderful life (the toughest one for me this round - nihilist blues is really good and i appreciate its uniqueness, but i unapologetically love their heavier side as i’ve often stated)
