Great cast. D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (Reservation Dogs), Charles Melton (Riverdale, May December), Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things, Gladiator II), Kit Connor (Heartstopper). Cosmo Jarvis (Shogun), Finn Bennet (True Detective: Night Country), and Will Poulter As far as this story goes I will keep an open mind. I do love a well done war film, but I am immediately wary of anything based on the word of ex-Navy Seals.
Again the "everything is based on memory" tagline is killing me. Few things I trust less than the memory of Navy SEALs about what they did on the battlefield lol Looks like it will be a sick film though. Seems like they're going for a straightforward heavy on combat less on plot approach like a Black Hawk Down or The Outpost, which were both great war films.
I respect the man for branching out and doing what he wants to do, but I just really hope he goes sci-fi with his next film.
Looks pretty intense. I really don’t see why someone being a veteran gives them the credentials to be a director. With their being a lot less modern war movies in theaters, I could see this being A24’s biggest movie.
Definitely. I’m just saying I’ve never seen a studio use the title of “Iraq War Veteran” for a director.
‘Warfare’ Review: Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland Plunge the Audience Into the Hell of Combat in Visceral Real-Time Nerve-Shredder 'Warfare' Review: Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland's Tense Combat Thriller "Character detail is reduced to whatever behavior we observe in the men under pressure. There’s no gung-ho bravado, no talk of wives or girlfriends back home, no romanticization of war or political speechifying, no “U.S.A!” jingoism, no exposition. What there is, instead, is raw feeling — fear and pain as much as courage, adrenaline, decisiveness and determination, along with disorientation as chaos escalates, often with minimal visibility. While the situation is too messy and the action too real for movie-ish displays of camaraderie, we’re aware at all times of the extraordinary degree to which these men are looking out for each other."
Sitting at 94% on RT with 31 reviews. Not that it means much, but good start to see. That said, I don't really care about this movie. The previously posted review alleviates some of my worries, so I'm still going to watch it because it's Garland. But damn, I wish the dude was just doing legitimately anything else.
When I saw “Drop” on Monday, they showed the trailer for this and when it ended, some older guy said out loud “That looks exciting.” Don’t think he got the right message from the marketing.
Yeah, I’m sure the politics/message of it (in the abstract) will be debated, but definitely intense and well made. Reminded me a lot of “Black Hawk Down”. I don’t know who would want to join the Army after seeing that, but I’m sure psychos will be activated thinking they’d be the heroes.
If you want to see another modern war film with a matter of fact tone also similar to Black Hawk Down check out 2020's The Outpost. I think it was made in a similar way to Warfare too where the vets being portrayed had a big say in the creative process.
