Random other story that I remember hearing, but when Brandon was forming NOY, he was required to first send demos for a first look to DTR before he was able to shop them around himself. So he wrote the worst songs and recorded these awful "demos" to send to them to get out of the contract so he could go on to release his masterpiece elsewhere. No idea if that's true or not, but it's what I heard at the time. And that Vinnie didn't go that route, and that's IATA ended up still on DTR.
I'd be really curious as to what the actual workings of this deal is that lets Parting Gift release this stuff; I'd have sworn they'd be dead broke after having to redo all of the messed up NFG pressings, but here we are. The pressing numbers are WAY down from what they were doing (runs of 200-300 instead of 1500), but I'm sure the Parting Gift team also has a good chunk of revenue coming in from their booking side with Bravo Artists and running a couple of venues in Cleveland. It seems intentionally obscured with having things run through a couple of different labels and making it seem like it's Drive Thru putting these out despite the Cleveland address and Paypal/shipping initially coming from Tragic Hero. I want to assume positive intent, but it's difficult given all of the weirdness we know of with Drive Thru.
IIRC, Movielife were playing shows at the very end of the 40 Hour cycle before the break up with "drop us" taped on their amps. I always got the feeling there was a lot of bad blood there.
I’m still getting IATA because it’s the album I know and love. However, I will also be buying the new version as undoubtedly it will be a lot faster than the OG, lining up with how they play those songs live.
I remember hearing that back then as well! Smart on Brandon's part if true. I'd like an alternate reality where Straylight Run did the same thing and weren't stuck on Victory...
I only saw them during the beginning of that album cycle. But that wouldn't surprise me from everything I've heard... I actually had tickets to see them at the MA festival that was their "last" show but wound up not being able to go. I remember thinking to myself: "It's the Movielife. They tour a ton and I've seen them like, 6-7 times over the last few years. I'll catch 'em next time." I also remember getting back to my college dorm to an AIM message on my laptop from a friend who was at the show that said something like "Um, I think the Movielife just broke-up? Maybe?" and the pit it left in my gut. LOL
I was thinking the same thing. The band's sound has changed so much since the debut. It'll be interesting to see how those songs evolve in the re-record.
Predatory label practices aside, it would definitely be nice for these 3rd party vinyl labels to reach out to the bands to facilitate either a unique pressing like Jason said or even certain perks the band could stand to profit off of even if they’re not directly getting anything from the records themselves. Expanded linear notes would be cool, charge a couple extra bucks for an insert that breaks down the writing process, how songs were recorded, photos, etc.
2025 and we’re still able to find stuff to discuss what heinous people Richard and Stefanie Reines turned into. I was going to say it’s always strange to me how awful people can be behind something loved by so many… but in reality it’s probably the same for most things. Not you, Jason. You’re one of the good ones
We got them in early '03 in Cleveland headlining with A Static Lullaby and I think they had dates that summer with Further Seems Forever along with the big Honda Civic run and festivals. Wild to think that 40 Hour came out in early 2003 and they were gone six months later after a busy summer that put them in front of bigger crowds than they'd ever played before.
I think one of the earlier iterations of this was when I think Enjoy The Ride pressed “Progress” by Rx Bandits (a DTR record) like 15 years ago and Rx straight up said they didn’t authorize it and discouraged people from buying it. It has yet to be repressed since then.
Company Ink's pressing for "Nothing Gold Can Stay" was similar; the band didn't approve that one either.
I mean, in this case, shortly after the album came out, Vinnie talked about how they kind of got lost in the studio as far as the tempo goes. I think they recorded it, then hit the road and played everything faster by feel, and then they got the finished album and were like, “oh shit, a lot of these songs are too slow.” This is like 19 years ago, so I may be off on some details, but it was something like that. I’d imagine they’d boost the bpms for a re-record. Calling it the Avalanche Family edition or whatever just feels like some of the songs are going to rip even harder.
Enjoy the Ride was going to do Catalyst a WHILE ago but Chad got wind of it and squashed the project, I believe. He wanted it to go one of their friends' labels.
More details are coming out on The Starting Line’s MAKE YOURSELF AT HOME re-press. Looks like the retail variant will be orange/tangerine, according to (ha) Tower Records: Starting Line: Make Yourself At Home EP - VINYL LP and Target: The Starting Line - Make Yourself At Home EP (Colored Vinyl Orange) : Target
I know it won't happen, but I'd love for this to have the full band version of "Lasting Impressions" on it as a bonus track.
