I have a weird relationship with them, I didn't grow up listening to them but my high school friend was obsessed and took us all to see Across the Universe in theaters and that's the first time I heard (a version of) a lot of those songs. I can recognize most of their hits and enjoy them just fine when they come on but I've never sought out their songs let alone their albums to sit down and actually listen to. They kinda just remind me of that one high school friend whenever I hear them haha
That's exactly why I never listened to them haha. Respected them for what they were but couldn't be bothered to listen. Then a few years ago I watched their rooftop performance at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame after having a gummy and fell in love with Get Back. Got familiar with Let It Be and have been slowly digging through their discography.
I do think The Beatles became something of a "homework" band for a lot of people born in the '80s and beyond, which is a bummer, because they're great! Similar to required reading at school, I mostly rejected their stuff as a teen before coming back to it in my 20s and 30s.
i actually got into the beatles LATE. the movie 'yesterday' made me a fan. is there a tracklist out for this?
It blows my mind the thought that people wouldn’t listen to something based on gender or because it was made after / before a certain year. Also weird that people would say they like something because they feel like they should. People are strange. Shouldn’t it be more ‘check these out, you might like them’ rather than ‘check these out, you MUST like them’ Also… I much preferred The Kinks, albeit a bit more hit or miss at times.
This is kind of how I feel about them. I know their big songs and can appreciate them for what they meant to music, but I've never been compelled to deep dive into their catalog. Maybe that's just the sheer volume of material to go through, but I feel like there's something there that made them the best selling artist of all time that I'm just not getting. A lot of the music I listen to is due to a connection I made with it during a specific point in my life, whether or a memory or something I associate with an album or song and I just don't have that with a lot of stuff from their era (aside from The Grateful Dead, Zeppelin, CSNY, and Pink Floyd because that was the stuff my parents listened to).
Kinda feels like we should assign homework for this thread to all go listen to Abbey Road tonight or something.
It is funny that you can pinpoint in their discography where a lot of scene bands started listening to The Beatles.
The Beatles are one of those few bands that I don’t understand how anyone doesn’t like them. Feels like the ultimate contrarian move to dislike them, but to have an opinion about them having never listened to them feels bonkers, to me. Revolver is the record everyone should listen to/have.
i do enjoy The Beatles quite a bit (those Red and Blue compilations were in constant rotation when i was in high school). i just don't really prioritize having them on vinyl yet (and if they're gonna keep releasing remasters, i might hold off for a full boxset).
i wouldn't say i actively dislike the beatles but i also don't actively make an effort to listen to them
Rubber Soul and Revolver for me. I’m more of a Beach Boys guy tbh. But if I’m really being honest, I’m sooner reaching for my Brazilian records if I’m doing something from the 60’s. That shit is peak
Because of this 60’s talk and since you didn’t ask, I’m going to tell you all the records I own that were pressed in the 60’s: 1961 The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Out 1962 Elvis Presley - Elvis Presley Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane - Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane Bill Evans & Jim Hall - Undercurrent 1963 Dylan Thomas - Reading His Complete Recorded Poetry 1964 Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto featuring Antonio Carlos Jobim - Getz and Gilberto The Beatles - Meet The Beatles 1965 Neal Hefti - Batman Theme 45 Thelonious Monk - Misterioso The Beach Boys - The Beach Boys Today! 1966 The Rolling Stones - December’s Children The Rolling Stones - Out Of My Head Eric Dolphy - Out To Lunch! 1967 Bobby Hutcherson - Happenings Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers - The Witch Doctor 1968 The Beatles - Hey Jude/Revolution 45 The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band The Beatles - The White Album
