What I’ve been doing is essentially going artist by artist and completing discographies. Jimmy Eat World and Dashboard are my current projects.

The pandemic seems to be the thing pushing my purchases too - mail day gives a new element of excitement

As a fan of completism I can relate to the excitement of this. Where are you at with each of those discogs?

Dashboard after buying the EPs today I have everything up to A Mark, A Mission (which drives me nuts cause I used to own Alter and Shade but sold them both a few years ago) Jimmy all I need is Clarity and Static Prevails (and their debut if that ever sees the light of day).

  5. i've bought too many during this covid shit, and i've only listened to records maybe 5 times over the last however-many-months. sigh.

I feel like there’s also an exorbitant amount of stuff getting a first time pressing or repress this year too.

I think the only artists that I'm closet to completing are The Dangerous Summer and Oasis.
I used to have all of Adele, but I sold 19 and 21 a few years ago when I moved. Stupid stupid boy.

Nice! I recently picked up Place, I'd like to grab Dusk, Shade and Alter at some point. I didn't realize Shade and Dusk were so pricey, yikes!

My record player broke in august and I have just kept on buying new releases even though I can’t listen to them! I don’t have a problem at all I swear!

    Maybe so, maybe not.

I haven't bought much during the pandemic, but shoutout to Polyvinyl for this insane deal I scored last month. These four records for $50 shipped!

I now have all the Dashboard studio full-lengths except Shade, and I have all the JEW records Clarity onwards except Stay on My Side Tonight.

Just don’t try variant collecting. You’ll never survive

I grabbed Stay on Amazon for 14 dollars, I figured why not.

Yeah, I know it's not super expensive. Just haven't gotten around to buying it yet!

Shockingly vinyl in general is super cheap on Amazon. I just hate giving them my money haha

I’m always impressed when someone has all the variants but ya that would do me in.

I need to set up my Discogs account to start selling some stuff. Until then here are some records I'm looking to part with if anyone is interested:

Weezer - The Black Album (clear black splatter)
Smashing Pumpkins - Shiny and Oh So Bright (clear vinyl)
    Smashing Pumpkins - Oceania
    She & Him - Classics
    High Fidelity Soundtrack (TV show)

I wish U-Turn made a table with automatic features. I'm lazy and addicted to being lazy.

Can’t you just go for a brand that does make automatic features? U-Turn is great, but there’s other companies that make great turntables as well.
I feel the same about the automatic features though. I would love to be able to flip from 33 to 45 without pulling apart pieces and moving the belt. I didn’t realize how important that was to me until after purchasing my current one.

I’ve slowly started doing my Jimmy Eat World discography collection. I have gone further than just the full lengths too- my god how many splits and singles this band has. I have 20 releases according to Discogs, and counting down my want list I’m still something like 15 away. It’s going to take me several years.

I try to complete a lot of artists, but it seems like there’s so many with that *one* record that is impossible to find, or impossible to find at a price that isn’t outrageous. I have essentially everything from The Early November, but it feels like I’ll never find a copy of For All Of This that isn’t in triple digits now that I’ve put it off for so long.

O I can only imagine. Yesterday alone with all the Julien Baker variants, you could easily end up with 7 records. What artist or artists have you gone down that path with?

I would never do the variant thing unless I was very, very wealthy, and even then, probably not. I've always been a bit confounded by people who spend a ton of money to buy the same album 15 times to get it on different colored plastic. But hey, you do you!

I wouldn’t do it myself but I can understand the appeal. I feel like it goes beyond the music obviously and turns more into a “gotta catch em all” vibe and the hunt along the accomplishment becomes the reward.

I saw someone post somewhere their collection of every single Circa Survive variant and it was impressive to me. But ya it’s a lot of money.

There are just a lot of pieces of it I don't get. Like, vinyl is expensive as is. How much do people spend to buy every variant of, say, the new Taylor Swift album? Then there's the storage piece; like, where do you put all that stuff? How much of your vinyl shelf is taken up by different versions of the same record? I guess I'd always rather purchase a new record than a record I already have. There's a ton of stuff I'd like to own and a ton of artists I'd like to support without even getting into the variant game.

I guess it makes the most sense to me as a "I really want to make sure this artist makes it so I'm going to give them lots of money and buy everything they release."
