  1. I love my NFG sticks and stones hoodie and yet it would be so much better without the arm print!!

  3. Totally. I think putting things in the vault for a bit, doing special anniversary pressings is great, but at least you gotta have more copies so they don't sell out day one of every pressing. Sucks that now multiple times the albums alone have sold out, but are available in more expensive bundles with merch (even if this DID lead to how I finally was able to get LLL). And, like you said, for an album released in the last 5 years, it should be available for not an arm and a leg.

You can't buy their CURRENT album, released three months ago, for less than a hundred bucks! that sucks!

i know vinyl manufacturing can occasionally be backed up and the cost of materials is higher, but is it really that difficult to keep up with demand in a steady fashion? you don't always have to have it in stock, but maybe assess demand every year or two and do some smaller runs. like i think about how Peripheral Vision by Turnover is 10 this year, and they're on their 13th pressing now (if you count the anniversary pressings).

I understand both sides of this argument. It is super rewarding to track down a good deal on a rare record, and having something that’s tough to find can be a fun point of pride, as it is for any type of collecting.

That said, vinyl is the primary way I support artists, and I think that’s the case for a lot of people in this thread. It stinks when you can’t buy recent albums from bands you like because they are out of print. At very least, press enough that you can have your new album around for a year or two for anyone who discovers it a little later. There is zero excuse for your 2025 released new album to be out of stock and going for $100+ resale prices when we’re only three months and change into 2025!

It's been a few months so it's time for me to once more ask the universe for a pressing of Augustana's first record.

    Please.

Didn’t find Pink but got to order Serenity! Huge bump here, thank you.

The Maine is one of few fan cultures that can justify this vinyl approach on its own, having followed the journey for a while, and being in a weirdly tight community that will pounce all these records/unique shows. It’s a cool charm, but leads to weird moments where I’m in Disney World dropping $50 on a record between rides lol.

I’m a big fan of certain indie labels that do like 1-2 color pressings that are limited for collectors and then just have standard black copies that are always available.

I’ve been collecting for 20 years this year (legit makes me want to throw up) and nothing turns me off more now than like all these “exclusive” color variants. Just keep it simple. I liked how Touche amore did it. They had like 3 colors? And a tour press?

Anything above 100 for me is off limits, but there’s plenty of 80 dollar records i’d love to spend 25 on. My poor financial decision-making is not a game!

  11. I agree that price gouging resellers have gotten out of hand in some cases, including the past few years when artists have had to start tracing buyers to avoid bots and whatnot. I also think people choosing a price they’d be comfortable with to part with a thing they love has always been a part of the game - it’s something we see all the time in this very thread from users who I don’t believe have any intention of ripping other folks off

To be clear I’m not anti repress, I just don’t think it’s something that needs to be constantly happening or on hand at all times. It doesn’t matter when a person got into collecting, it could be this year or 20 years ago, people have always been stuck playing catch up and had to search, trade, save, or hold out for a repress. Also I am aware there are more extreme examples that you were kind enough to not use, but I’m just saying… I would pay $80 without blinking for some of the records on my wantlist and walk away feeling accomplished lol. Not sure it matters the year the music was released

I know it’s a bit ladder pull-y of a take, and understand if people don’t agree! I do value and listen to my records but I don’t rely on them to connect with the music that they contain. They’re mostly just cool little collectibles and one of many fun ways to support an artist

  12. One thing is for certain, we can all agree on the arm print thing. Nothing gets me to pass quicker

  13. I just disagree, fundamentally, with the idea that this has to be part of the game for albums released this year. Or in the last five.

If we're talking about an album from 2002 or something, and the artist doesn't have the rights to press it, then that creates real scarcity, and maybe you have an argument. Hunting for that can be fun, paying more makes sense, it's part of the whole thing. But I just do not agree that fake scarcity for new releases is needed or adds anything to the hobby, especially for albums the band owns the rights to press.

And then doing a re-press, you should press enough that people can get it without too much stress IMO, you know demand, try and match it. This AC press shouldn't sell out day one and shouldn't sell out on individual records but still be up in more expensive bundles. To me that's just ... kinda mean?

This is it for me - given the chance, I'd much rather put the money in the pocket of the band than someone who sat on a record long enough for resale to go up.

I remember someone mentioning they had a copy of The Maine LLL they'd sell me. Give me a few weeks. I may bite lol.

  21. I get that - I also try to support artists where I can. Maybe this is just simply the most cynical take, but especially in regards to artists such as The Maine who clearly do well enough for themselves… I don’t always buy that most folks clamoring for represses are doing it as much out of desperation to support the artist than they are to fill a hole on their own shelf (there are other ways to support artists than buying vinyl). Of course there’s no way to quantify that so the point is kind of moot, but at least to me, within reason, I am not interested in the business savvy of an artist - what they do with money left on the table is on them, not me. If that means I’ve missed out on buying a vinyl copy of their new album for the time being, I am completely okay with being jealous while adding it to my wantlist and keeping my eyes peeled for the future

If anyone's got a copy of Make Do & Mend's Everything You Ever Loved taking up space on their shelf that they want to give a new home to, lemme know. There's a bunch of them cheap on Discogs but I'd rather throw money your way.

Likewise for The Sidekicks Weight Of Air. That one rarely pops up and it's the missing piece in their discography for me.

I hear ya - absolutely not trying to give the impression that I can’t see the other side of this conversation. To me, the difference between authentic and manufactured scarcity only really matters when it comes to necessities. Collecting vinyl is a privilege. $20 per or $100 per, constant availability or not, this is very much a privileged thing we’re a part of. And it bums me out a little bit when it feels like the community (general, including labels and artists - not specifically here) sways away from that humbled hobbyist mentality and more into the line of straight up uncut consumerism. But I understand that part of fighting that would be to meet demand and eliminate price gouging. Perfectly willing to concede that my view on this might just be dated what with the massive uptick in collectors this side of 2020 lol
