I feel like that's just where we are now with the charts, though. Hard to put together strings of hits like Adele did in 2011 and 2015/16. Albums like Harry's House and Midnights are blockbusters that have overperformed by every metric, but both of them still only had one monster single apiece. (So far, on Midnights, but I don't think "Karma" is going to do "Anti-Hero" numbers.)

Not to nitpick, but Lavender Haze is creeping into Anti-Hero status, yeah? I know it's not the TikTok hit and didn't deliver the "its me, hi, im the problem its me" meme, but when I turn on the radio (which is rare) I can't go 30 minutes without hearing it.

“Lavender Haze” is at like 49 on the chart and its biggest week was the “every song on Midnights is in the top 10” phenomenon from week 1 streams. It’s done well, but “Anti-Hero” is her biggest hit ever. Definitely not on the same level.

Hmmm..I disagree because Harry had “As It Was” and “Late Night Talking” and Swift has “Anti Hero” and “Lavender Haze.”

Biggest hit ever? Anti-Hero is bigger than something like Shake it Off?

exactly what i was just thinking.... Shake it Off was literally EVERYWHERE. And so was Love Story.

Those are solidly performing singles following gargantuan world-conquering hits. "Late Night Talking" isn't even in the same galaxy as "As It Was" in terms of streaming numbers or reach. Same with "Lavender Haze" compared to "Anti-Hero." I'm not saying these albums are "one hit wonders," more that they're "one number 1 hit albums," which seems to be more the standard model for even really top-performing blockbuster albums from big pop stars now. Comparatively, three songs apiece from 21 and 1989 went to number 1. That really doesn't happen much anymore.

In terms of time at number 1, yes. "Anti-Hero" spent eight weeks at the top of the charts, compared to four for "Shake It Off." "Blank Space" actually held onto the top of the charts longer than "Shake It Off" did, but got surpassed by "Anti-Hero" as Taylor's longest-running number 1. That's not the only metric to determine which hit is "biggest," but it's definitely notable.

I’m happy with just the one copy, I think!

Sure! Definitely not the norm now. But I’m saying “30” didn’t even have a steady follow-up single to “Easy On Me.” It pretty much was a one-hit album, which I assume the label was not expecting after her track record of smashes.

Idk, I’ve heard “Oh My God” a decent amount on the radio and out in the world, and I think it’s continued to put up solid streaming numbers. Not a huge smash, but I think it fits with the trend we’re talking about.

I feel like I have no concept for how big a song is unless it's a massive smash on the level of "As It Was," "Anti-Hero," "Flowers," etc.

Seeing Craig's stats for the new Taylor songs compared to the 1989 singles is really eye-popping for me. It really puts into perspective how much I have fallen out of touch with the singles charts and how much mainstream radio/music consumption has changed. I have not gotten around to listening to Midnights (general Taylor fatigue) and haven't heard Anti-Hero. That song is conservatively in the discussion as her biggest single and yet it does not feel like it's everywhere the way those 1989 songs and some of the other radio hits did. I suppose maybe that is partly to do with the playlist and TikTok effect as well.

Man, I feel like I have heard "Anti-Hero" in every public place I've been in for the past six months, haha

Maybe that's the thing. Perhaps I am hearing it and not knowing, but I feel like I know her voice at this point. I'll have to listen and report back. But even still, this is truly highlighting that I am simply out of touch with popular music. No other way to spin it haha. I knew that I had been slipping because I have tried to up my new artist discovery, so something had to give. There just isn't the same free time as when I was younger. I just didn't realize how skewed my balance has gotten.

If you aren't watching videos on TikTok/Reels/whatever FB calls them, and you don't listen to the radio, it's totally believable to not know what that song sounds like if you didn't seek it out.

I totally get it. I probably hear a fraction of the hugely popular stuff these days.

I use Instagram, but don't watch reels unless by accident lol. Don't have TikTok and while my FB profile is not deleted, I haven't had the app for some time. My usage has definitely gone way down. When I do pop in it is not to watch their video content. It's usually because my fiance sent me something on FB marketplace or something like that. I still have Twitter for sports news via my lists, but that is also not something I try to use much. I do feel mentally healthier without so much social media in my life though.
