I finally pulled the trigger on the KEF q150 speakers since they were on their sale of $300 for the holidays. Feels pretty endgame as long as my setup is where it is in my house. I now have the Fluance RT85 with the Ortofon Blue cartridge running into an Art DJ Pre II preamp, into the SMSL SA300 class D mini amp, into the KEF q150s. Sounds amazing. I could see possibly adding a small subwoofer down the line, but feeling pretty content right now.

Anyone ever have trouble using Bandcamp gift cards to buy vinyl? I can redeem it but checking out displays an error message “Your gift card balance cannot be used at this time.” I checked online and this seems to be a pretty common complaint on Reddit. I’ve reached out to support but no response yet.

 

Heard back from support and I ordered my records.

i had no idea who that band was, until last friday:

so we were high on mushrooms and a friend wanted to hear their music. he screamed ‘hey google! play ‘esoteric’ by toe. google’s reply was ‘sure, here’s ‘africa’ by toto.

this happened over two. dozen. times. finally the homeowner pulled up his phone and played the song and then i asked ‘hey google! who plays this song?’ it replied ‘this is ‘esoteric’ by toe’. nonstop hilarity ensued.

Now I am only missing Identity Crisis and Anthology. Which are priced higher than I am looking to pay. So, unless there are represses, I have completed my vinyl Thrice collection for now.

what prompted you to drop the Sony for the mini amp? I’ve been struggling with my Sony shutting down at medium volume and I’ve been unable to rectify it. May just replace the setup

 

The space I had it in didn’t really allow enough airflow, and I noticed it getting warm at times. I also was having second thoughts on having to find a passive subwoofer and not an active one if I ever wanted to add one down the line. The mini amp fixed both issues, being a much smaller device, giving off less heat, and had a subwoofer out, and I didn’t notice any degradation in sound quality.

eventually I hope to have the space to add an amp like the Cambridge AXR85 that I think would be a noticeable upgrade in sound quality, but the space just isn’t there for me right now.
