    wait, wut?

Whom have you seen saying ~generally~ CD quality is top tier?

Can you find SACD’s with a high quality player that sound better than most generic vinyl pressings? Totally.

but, dollars to donuts - all things being equal. A well pressed record on a quality turntable will beat most generic CD’s.

Judging by the number of people who apparently buy vinyl with no intention of ever playing it, the audio quality argument does not matter at all. CDs simply lack the same aesthetic/keepsake that vinyl has, which I think is probably the core draw for most people who collect.

When I first got into vinyl, the whole deal was "it sounds better than any other source, the analog source lets the music breathe, etc" but vinyl seems to be just part of the equation now, that you pair with a streamer that supports lossless run through a DAC and amp along with a CD player too.

just because CDs are better quality than vinyl doesn't mean they're the best. if people were audiophiles, truly, they'd have an HQ external setup and just run FLACs into it lol. that's not why people buy CDs

I didn't mean to end up arguing for CDs, I'm firmly in the vinyl camp, but I could understand someone starting now with CDs if vinyl is getting harder and harder to get a hold of, not to mention the prices are rising.

  6. CDs are so much easier and cheaper to manufacture. I'm not sure why they ever started declining once vinyl and cassettes started to take off again.

If anyone else is a fan, Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats’ brand new album is included in Walmart’s $15 vinyl Black Friday sale. I know it’s mostly best-ofs/comps, so I was pleasantly surprised to find this among the shipper.

They fell off because you can get similar or better quality on a streaming platform that costs the same as a CD, but you get everything ever.

CD’s aren’t cool. They aren’t special. They come with inadequate artwork and tiny lyric sheets.

Vinyl is awful in a lot of ways, mostly convenience and cost, but superficially - it beats CDs every time.

  9. I do like the larger artwork and everything that comes with vinyl. From a collector’s standpoint, vinyl wins. But from an actual listening experience, I personally listen to vinyl last because of just how finicky they can be. Even if you have an incredible pressing and set up, the vinyl could be warped and completely ruin the entire listening experience.

I had a Box Car Racer vinyl that had a slight warp and I never got past track 1 and ended up selling it. Granted, it wasn’t a great pressing to begin with, but still, that’s why vinyl is generally my least go-to way of listening to music. And I have hundreds of records… haha.

Witnessed the phenomenon y'all been talking about firsthand today. Was at my local Target for some other stuff and happened by the music section. Saw someone grabbing what looked to be the last copy on the shelf of the Red rerecording. Heard them remarking to their friend that they didn't even own a record player but just wanted the big picture and liner notes or whatever.

Ofc the root problem here isn't that Taylor Swift fans want a memento that they're not going to listen to, it's that capitalism ruins everything

Y’all wanna be mad at Adele because she’s an easy target, but Taylor’s reissues are just as much to blame if not moreso. That reissue is a 4xLP.

I say collect whatever you want and play it however you want. Cassettes are popular again, and they look and sound terrible compared to other available options.
