Without sounding like a grinch or out with the times, what's with all these people who collect records posting pictures of them on Instagram, literally stacking them on top of each other for arty colour matching shots?! If they're not stacking them all over the place, they're placing them on blankets and the carpet covering them in props. Am I going insane?!

I wince, if I catch the inner sleeve against the record putting it back.

I thought following fellow vinyl collectors on Instagram would be really interesting… instead it just makes me want to tear my eyes out. So many are purely all about the aesthetic, including mishandling the vinyl, putting it all over the place, stacking them up, spreading them across the floor. Probably never actually play them anyway so they don’t care about damage . Don’t get me started on people’s extreme aversion to black vinyl nowadays as well. If a band does a pressing and it doesn’t have a black variant it makes me like them a little less (semi-joking). Rant over.

    Black vinyl pros:
    -usually cheaper
    -often 180g
    -sounds better

    Cons:
    -no pretty colors

When it’s colored vinyl but the colors do not match the artwork or general aesthetic direction…I hate that shit

Bad take. Album is good, band had a lot of hype during that era, it's never had a vinyl pressing before. Complaining about an album getting pressed because you personally don't want it is wild.

I don’t mind non-matching colors for the novelty (I’m a sucker for red and purple), but I generally buy the one that does match the art the best. Always seemed kinda funny to me that rarer or special variants that are both more expensive and often don’t match the art as well or don’t look as good in other ways. I appreciate that the color match variants are usually cheaper and easier to get. Like Lydia’s Paint it Golden repress - the 2 larger print variants look sooo much better than the rarer sold out one (which is still a relevant color but much more boring).

new album is fantastic - feel like they should’ve blown up a lot more

The absolute callout. (But also I seem to remember her having a ton of variants.)

I dunno, I just always come back to, if people didn't want it they won't buy it. I really don't think it's on the artist to keep their fans from buying multiple copies. If someone wants all that in their collection, then go for it.

  17. What she’s saying is definitely less about exploiting fans and more about the environmental impacts of so much production

it feels like a combination of the two - that exploitation of fans contributes more to environmental detriment. by generating demand to boost sales, you manufacture more records to meet that demand, which requires more materials and potentially harmful production processes.

Can someone show me a chart that shows where vinyl production falls on the "bad for the environment" scale? I'm sure it is to an extent, but is it any different than any other "collecting" type hobby? Funkos, baseball cards, posters, I dunno, what else do people collect? Any sort of material collection feels like it could potentially fall into a "bad for the environment" bucket.

So an artist grappling with the exact thing Billie is talking about then.

yes, and acknowledging it as the "gentler side of man-kind's death wish" which I find very apt since the waste is made in service of art.

Idk, there is nuance there but I mostly feel like that there are greater factors destroying the environment that deserve to be called out. Calling out artists for selling vinyl and/or collectors who only want to best support an artist—just seems misguided.

I'm all for the use of recycled materials for records. A few companies are already doing it and the sound quality is on par with traditional records. There's really no reason not to at this point. I do regularly reconsider engaging in this hobby as there's no doubt that record production is bad for the environment.

You’re obviously right on all accounts but I think the larger still-missing point here is just that of the greater ills of consumerism. I collect plenty of things, including vinyl, so I’m not innocent here but when you think about it collecting anything is really kinda messed up lol. This definitely isn’t the first time I’ve questioned the “morality” of continuing to buy dozens of things that largely just sit there, even if they are supporting art and relatively low on the environmental degradation scale. Not sure there’s really a fix here given, as you said, how many bigger fish there are to fry, but I think it’s a solid point to make regardless.
