Listening to this again more closely with headphones and this is definitely front and back-heavy. There are a few good songs in the middle but a handful of tracks that either just aren't my vibe or feel like filler. We're 100% getting a more subdued Vince on this record which may just not be my thing. I do appreciate how vulnerable the lyrics are this time around. I just hope he takes more musical risks on the next one.

 

Damn I think the middle might be my favorite -- "When Sparks Fly" and "East Point Prayer" are my top two right now.

I think I dig the balance Vince strikes on songs like "East Point Prayer" between the monotone delivery and the cruelty being described in the lyrics. Like I could see how someone is bored by his voice on that track, but to me it works perfectly: something about delivering a line like "Ain't no peacing up if you body one of us; body for a body, big-body Benz truck" in such a detached voice really sells the weary, haunted emotion of the song for me.

I like ‘get’ what he’s doing vocally on here. I just don’t think it sounds very engaging

 

Those two tracks are good. I don’t really like Papercuts, Player Ways, or Bang That as much tbh

 

PLAYER WAYS & BANG THAT go hard - my guess is anyone who isn't digging this just hasn't spent enough time with it yet and you will come around on every song eventually. My first impression was disappointment that I didn't like it as much as S/T but it's grown on me every day since.

 

Papercuts is so good. Wasn’t a huge fan at all at first and thought that the hook was lazy but it’s just such a cool song. One of my favs. Feels like the centerpiece of the album in a lot of ways.
