No it's totally fair, I didn't intend on derailing the thread - just wasn't cool with what was being said Let's all admit the beat on SAMO is too hot
Yeah I gotcha, that makes sense. I didn't mean to be dismissive, which I realize now is how I came off. That beat is fantastic.
Are Mis-Gendered Band Names ‘Ironic’ or Sexist? This is the thread and article that influenced my way of thinking in this particular matter. If Sophie does not identify as male then thats on me and I apologise, but all the interviews and articles I could find before posting originally referred to Sophie as he/him. I do take this stuff personally and did check as much as I could find beforehand, but calling him a dork/nerd was flippant and set things of negatively so again that's on me and I'm sorry for derailing this thread.
Man if the dude can make a killer beat and women are still getting recognition/work in the industry than idgaf really I've been blasting the album all day, so so good can't get over it
pssssst guess what! you can identify as he/him and express yourself as feminine as you want! gender is fluid. sophie is elusive and it has not been confirmed one way or another how they identify and it is their right as an artist to present themselves however they see fit. if they want to distort gender perceptions they can.
also if your source for sophie identifying as male is articles referring to them as he/him you need a new source, music media is notorious for misgendering people it happens literally every single day.
True. We have no confirmation so I was wrong to speculate. But, as I said earlier the only reason I brought it up was because of the article I linked a few posts up - I re-read it and it actually has Grimes calling out Sophie which is probably what triggered my memory in the first place!
even if sophie did identify as male i think beholding names and clothes to one gender and one gender only is silly. people can express themselves however they see fit. if a man wants to wear woman's clothing because they like how they look in it why is that not okay? if the name sophie is how the artist wants to present themself with that name why shouldn't they be able to? again, gender identify is fluid, you should be able to identify however you want and express yourself however you want. if its for irony, sure thats a different story, but nothing about sophie strikes me as ironic.
Haven't got a problem with any of that at all - I myself have been inspired to experiment with women clothing by Young Thug! I don't want this to turn in to some excuse post per se, so i'll just say I've had issues with men harassing me for not being "masculine enough" my whole life due to my build/appearance ect so believe that IDGAF about that side of it!!! My issue was from the representation side of things, and someone who I may have incorrectly assumed was a male using a female name in order to be provocative/create an image that wasn't authentic. I had though Sophie was female up until the release of this Vince Staples record, and in total honesty I was slightly disappointed that it wasn't a case of my fav artist collaborating with a female producer on his huge rap record. But, as it's already been pointed out, i was assuming so thats on me.
for what it's worth, I didn't find anything ironic about the look of maniacal glee while the floor thundered under their control while skipping around in a blazer comprised solely of pink glitter
yo to be fair @PandaBear! admits they may have been misinformed about a man fronting as a woman and capitalizing on that so I think it'd be best to lay off this - feel like it might be detrimental to the cause to hammer someone who admits they may be wrong and to be fair, the ambiguity surrounding the situation doesn't necessarily mean they ARE wrong - but all evidence points to likely and I'm p cool with someone admitting they might've been misinformed
I just wanted to weigh in with my thoughts on how a male using a female pseudonym or expressing feminine qualities isn't sexist because I've seen that argument a lot and it doesn't make sense to me. Charges against pc music being sexist have always rang extremely hollow to me when there are plenty of women among them and when they collaborate endlessly with other women
I mean...ok? We don't have to all agree 100% on something, and my viewpoint was changed on this topic when Jason posted that article & thought the 'lack of women producing for a-list rappers but a guy using a female first name is?' belief that I originally had lined up with that, so I thought to post about it. I hope people don't believe I'm just trying to attack everything about the artist in question?
I agree wholeheartedly and didn't know the conversation was still going when I posted that - I was waiting for you to weigh in because I know you feel similarly that I'm sick of PC Music getting all this unwarranted shit
The lack of female producers is a huge problem, across all genres, but I don't think it's someone like Sophie's fault or issue to solve. But like I said, PC music (which Sophie isn't an official member of but extremely closely affiliated) is doing a lot for female representation and Sophie themselves has done great work with Charli XCX. My point is I totally 100% get where you're coming from but taking it out on Sophie is the wrong move which I think you realize so it's all good
Thanks. Discussions like this are good to have IMO, and, to be selfish, perhaps this one was purely for me to learn "hey, maybe think twice before posting the way you did buddy!" Now lets all go and listen to Crabs in a Bucket - objectively the best song on this Vince record by a clear margin.
Two things to elaborate on there because I don't want to take anything away from the amazing accomplishment that is this album: 1) if anybody has any further concerns or grievances to discuss on this issue, post in the PC music thread and I for one (as I'm sure Jake and Brando) would be happy to talk through them respectfully if you want to know more 2) in the underground dance music thread, there was recently an issue of a semi-prominent figure basically shitting on women's talent in the DJ community and I posted a reactionary thread on twitter full of people propping up amazing women in the scene - it would be worth exploring and for those that don't have the time I would be happy to list off a bunch of female producers in the electronic/dance music community if you're interested in pursuing this topic further or being exposed to great musicians that admittedly too often exist in the periphery
Is there something wrong? Some of my favorite artists released highly anticipated albums but I ended up enjoying this more. I thought that was a valid thing to post. Sorry. I'll see myself out of this thread.
