^ who cares. And it's annoying - I literally found out it was some nerd dude yesterday; for months whenever Sophie was mentioned on this site I was like "nice! a female making beats and getting major recognition!". No worries though - I found this quote that sums my thoughts up better than I could on my own: "Sophie's high-pitched celebration of everything girly and cute represents a social leveling that should be encouraged: serious electronic music can finally be pink and sparkly. On the other hand, by appropriating and objectifying stereotypically feminine identities while obscuring their own, the men of PC Music and Sophie are literally colonizing the female body and using it as an instrument for projecting their own agenda"
There are tons of female producers getting recognition all over the electronic spectrum - I somehow doubt you are a person of authority to speak on this topic? Also, Sophie is very elusive and as far as I know hasn't discussed this but I'm pretty sure he(?) is not heteronormative or at least seems to delight in twisting people's perceptions of what that means. Pretty cool of you to recycle somebody else's opinion to form your own tho!!! The music is fun, bizarre and challenging. Not liking it is one thing but I totally reject your critique. Actually, the more I think about it it's p fucked up of you to assume that somebody identifying with their femininity is ingenuine with literally no basis other than some article you read
It's funny that I wouldn't even have an opinion on this were it not for this forum and an article/discussion that was posted regarding males using female names/identities in music. Was pretty interesting/informative, but if you yourself are a person of authority to speak on this topic then please tell me how I'm "fucked up" some more! Show me some respect seeing as I'm not disrespecting anyone in here?
I'm trying not to engage because I'm actually offended at someone with zero knowledge making these broad assumptions about an artists who pretty clearly isn't this meathead bro you're trying to portray. But Joel hit it more elegantly and thoughtfully than I intended to.
well this all comes with the presupposition that you think he's a straight cis male adopting a female persona just for kicks which I don't think has ever been confirmed (and if it has I'd love to be directed towards that) but so far that speculation has lead to you calling an artist a lot of us love pretty passionately a dork and a nerd so I don't see that as being overly "respectful" I'm not an authority on anything but I do love electronic music quite a lot and know that there are tons of women killing it all over the damn place and are celebrated on this forum so the fact that you implied this would be a first on this site means you are, like, definitely not the authority on the topic anyways, sorry, back to Staples!
From what I could find, he is a straight cis male - If I only saw what my assumption saw then thats on me and an apology would be provided should I be wrong. Sorry to start something here but I really have not done much here. I said Led Zeppelin sucked earlier and none of their passionate fans called me a weiner!
last thing I'll say on the topic is that seeing Sophie was pure joy/the best live music experience I've ever had and I did not catch one whiff of inauthenticity in that big smile behind the decks
Oh, well - credit where it's due, I think Brandon was right that you were painting that picture without saying it directly. Even if it is confirmed that he is cis straight, the persona is highly conceptual and if it challenges how we interact with masculinity and celebrity than it's something worth talking about and again, I don't think you have the right to decide otherwise
Nothing to do with inauthenticity! I can try & find the article discussion I mentioned from a few months ago, but I'll drop it if thats what everyone wants.
