Today is a great day to share the new single and video from Vilde Tuv, a talented Norwegian artist, who is gearing up for the release of her new LP called Truthbomb on September 19th. “Start/Stop” offers a cool look at what this artist is capable of creating when she’s firing on all creative cylinders. This marks Vilde Tuv’s first time releasing a single in English and is a great sign of what’s to come. If you’re enjoying the video, please consider pre-ordering Truthbomb here.

The song balances restraint and release, both musically and lyrically—how did you approach capturing that push-and-pull between control and surrender in “Start/Stop”?

The theme of the lyrics came along with the intensity and the melodic shift in the chorus. Its like the lyrics describes the music as well. What if I’m allowed to feel strongly, feel euphoric?

The video directed by Maria Hilde places you in a surreal space, suspended between movement and stillness. How did the visual concept come together, and what role does it play in deepening the song’s themes?

For me this song is also about the algorithms of the body. When you fall in love, your body goes through a process that will take its time, and that you cant really control. Same thing with getting pregnant. You can have an abortion, but the body still has algorithms with hormones and different stages you will go through. I thought of it like getting on a train. I came to Maria’s studio and we started talking about train, and the classic Tumblr photo-op. We ended up with a full day on a rail-bike. We just have a lot of fun throwing ideas and making dreams come true!

You’ve described “Start/Stop” as about resisting and then yielding to life force—did creating the track teach you anything about your own relationship to impulse and momentum?

At least it taught me something about letting go and surrendering. When I handed over the demo to my co-producer Stockhaus, I felt he got the song’s DNA at the first shot, and he really helped me fulfill the song’s potential. Giving away responsibility, and not feeling I have to do everything myself, is also a big release for me. We’re moving faster together, and making a song can be easy!
