I honestly didn't know there was an actual difference between roguelike and roguelite until @Penlab's last post about it, thought people were just using 2 terms to mean the same thing for whatever quirk
I think one game sweeping a majority of the categories does a disservice to all the other games that should get a spotlight for how wonderful they were as well. 2025 was a great year for gaming so I just think it's ridiculous that one game got all the attention.
a roguelike is any game that is too hard for me also @oldjersey can obviously explain it better than anyone
I hope my post didn’t come across as me saying E33 is overrated. I fully respect it winning all that it has and feel that it’s deserved. I personally enjoyed my experience with Silksong and DS2 much more. That comes down to me not being into turn based games and the story being a bit much for me this year in particular as someone (tw + theme spoiler) dealing with the death of a parent and navigating the grief that comes along with it.
I may be the only person I know who is excited for 007 But yeah there were a decent number of highlights for me (Control the biggest obv)
Best debut independent game means the studios very FIRST game, while best indie is a general term. It could be a teams 5th game or something, just indie in general. If anything I think they could just rename Best Independent Debut to Best Independent Debut (Company) and then have Sandfall win instead of E33, since the title of the category actually refers to the company since it's *their* debut game.
I love E33, it stuck me with me after I played it. I loved that it was clearly inspired by games I loved growing up but was doing its own thing at the same time. That’s inspirational and made me start writing more seriously again. I hope what comes of this awards sweep isn’t a slew of E33-likes and instead investors looking at indie studios with passion and ambition they can fund without bloating their team sizes, suits forcing adherence to market trends in game design, etc. My only other concern really is that many people online are using this as a “gotcha” for Square Enix abandoning turn based games. They clearly love E33 having even invited them to the studio in Tokyo and recently even did a join art exhibition in France. Hope their suits and investors don’t try to pressure them to do something they don’t want to
Plenty excited for the new 007 game but mostly off the back of IO, Interactive I don’t think it’s shown particularly well but their latest Hitman trilogy means I’ll give anything they develop a shot
2025 was one of the best years in gaming and if you don't think so you need to either chalk it up to your tastes -- fair -- or the fact that you need to play more games. between Absolum, Hades 2, Expedition 33, Silksong, Nightreign, Renegades, Arc Raiders, Battlefield 6, Donkey Kong Bananza, Metroid Prime 4, Death Stranding 2, Popucom, AI Limit, Khazan, Doom The Dark Ages we had breadth like we haven't had it in forever. And idk, maybe it's just me but Expedition 33 clears all games for me back to whenever Bloodborne came out.
