We really don't need to make this a fucking mystery. The definition is below but the other important thing is Rogue in this case is a game. It's like Metroidvania; a roguelike literally means "game similar to Rogue". Roguelike (or rogue-like) is a style of role-playing game traditionally characterized by a dungeon crawl through procedurally generated levels, turn-based gameplay, grid-based movement, and permanent death of the player character. Most roguelikes are based on a high fantasy narrative, reflecting the influence of tabletop role-playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons.
There were a few odd choices as far as sequencing the trailers. Having Divinity or FoTOR as the big finale would've made more sense, especially with all the statue discussions leading up to things. I don’t love all of the segments between trailers/awards, but that's just a personal dislike of all award shows in general. I didn't need to see Sandfall win all the awards in order to feel validated in my absolute adoration of Expedition 33, but I’m still happy to see them get so much recognition. It's my favorite game since BG3, and as far as pure story goes no other game has made me feel as much as intensely, whether it be openly weeping or that warm feeling that makes you want to smile at everyone you meet and say something kind.
While none of this is necessarily wrong I think it is not a good way to clearly relay to someone what a roguelike game is, which is the point of all this (especially considering the turn based gameplay addition and the like)
Because that seems to be the huge benchmark. 2017 had BOTW and Odyssey. 2018 had GOW and RDR2, 2023 had TOTK and BG3. The other years didn’t have games that received the same critical acclaim as those titles.
I just think if your justification of a gaming year being good or bad is "but Metacritic!!!" then yeah that's dorky as all hell and you should just play the games and see how much you love them or not If you just don't like the games then that's a different thing and yeah
Is this a bit? I don't see the problem, everything in that paragraph are pretty standard gaming terms.
They're just not all consistently accurate enough. It clarifies by saying "traditionally" to add flexibility but there are a TON of rogues, including very acclaimed rogues, that those criteria do not apply to. The procedurally generated levels is probably the only thing that feels universal enough to be included (and the permadeath). So while it is descriptive if you know what a roguelike is, if you're just learning then you're gonna have a ton of follow-up questions "How is Returnal one then, it's not high fantasy and doesn't have turn based grid movement gameplay" "Enter The Gungeon isn't turn based" etc etc I see it like, the description doesn't need to have a hit rate of 100% but it has to be higher than like 50% on the typically acknowledged frontrunners of the genre that any person would see and understand and I don't think that description hits that
I mean, all genres are like this though. By setting ground rules and criteria, you can then both recognize what one traditionally is and when something is breaking those tenets. In before someone brings up roguelite.
Also omits one of the most important qualities IMO which is how progression works in a roguelike and how you do improve your odds as you play as a result of that
I edited and added a sentence that kinda addresses that I agree that it doesn't need to be a 100% hit rate, I just think it needs to be higher than that description
I’m biased but I would’ve loved to see Christopher Larkin win for music haha. But I’m not mad at E33 at all, that soundtrack is beautiful
I would've accepted nothing but E33 for that award but I do think Larkin still deserves credit for how great his score is for sure Just not via an award over E33
I’m not going to meticulously break down every GOTY winner for the past 10 years but E33 would’ve had a good shot in nearly every single year prior hypothetically (and I would’ve personally picked it over every winner outside of Elden Ring and maybe BG3)
I just think it's funny because E33 was so good that I was sitting here like "how do we give recognition to other great games as well" because IMO there are so many things that deserved praise alongside it but it just drowned all that out and all of a sudden it's like "no games were actually good enough this year at all" what?
I learned something from this so thank you (but also please call me Dustin, Austin is my best friend's name)
