I loved the first despite its flaws. When there's such a dearth in this genre, being "generic" is not a bad thing IMO, and I think the IGN reviewer misses that the nostalgia is the point. It invokes the 64-bit era by design, not trying to move the genre forward. I guess I just love what it is.

Personally, I want to actually feel the feelings I had when playing the Banjo games rather than just be reminded of those feelings. There is still fun to be had here and I will definitely be collecting everything I can, its just not on the level that I want it to be.

Finished Star Ocean 2, now it's time to finally play Clair Obscur. Having a hard time deciding between playing it on PS5 or my PC.

Please do not eye a Series S. It’s horrible value even if you’re not accounting for the genocide.
Also given Microsoft’s relatively shaky existence in the space I would no longer recommend buying into their ecosystem.

and yeah, Astral Chain. The game is *perfect*

You can still get a lot of mileage out of the Switch if you’ve been on hiatus for a while. Hades and Hades II on switch are very good rough lites that just rule. Switch should also have Bayonetta 1 and 2 for peak Devil May Cry-esque Platinum stylish action excellence. Into the Breach was a rouge lite chess-esque turn based game that was a ton of fun. I think Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal are on switch also if you’re looking for some of the finest first person shooters around. Heck the Witcher 3 runs on Switch. Metal Gear Solid Master Collection (MGS 1-3) is also truly a gift and holds up well. Depending on you tastes, and if you’re willing to compromise of performance (graphics and framerate), you might do pretty well just springing for a Switch pro controller and running that mama jama in dock mode.

If you’re looking for a console I’d suggest springing for PS 5 instead of Xbox. PlayStation is getting most of the releases Xbox does, but PlayStation’s exclusives are much better if you’re looking for a cinematic adventure game (Horizon Zero Dawn/Forbidden West, Ghost of Yotei/Tsushima, God of War [2018], Silent Hill 2 Remake, the Insomniac Spider-Man games [don’t sleep on Miles Morales], and Insomniac Wolverine coming out next year seems like it’s going to be another one it that groove). If you’re in for Xbox, you’re probably fine with the smaller hard drive unless you tend to 2 or 3 games concurrently (e.g. Call of Duty Warzone and a single player), or want to play humongous games like Call of Duty(s) or Cyberpunk, without doing too much storage management. The larger memory is more a quality of life improvement investment than a game accessibility investment.

Good point maybe I’ll get more mileage out of my Switch. I already have and finished the Dooms and the MGS collection. I’ve been looking into Astral Chain after the recommendations here and this definitely looks like my cup of tea.
I’ve never played any of the Bayonetta games so maybe I’ll give those a shot too!

Yacht Club doesn’t want to give a new release date until they’re sure that they’ll hit it, but the delay shouldn’t be more than a few months.

    oof.

    article is super interessante though

Still bummed but I think it'll be worth whatever the wait ends up being. Even just seeing a screenshot gets me excited for this one. Feels like it has a pretty distinctive look despite the 2D pixel art.

  24. I remember really enjoying the Yacht Club/Shovel Knight chapter in Jason's book but I haven't played Shovel Knight. Is it worth it for somebody with only a passing interest in platformers?

Shovel Knight is dope and you’ll get a huge bang for your buck if you wait for a sale given all the expansions they did, but if you’re only mildly interested in platforming I’m not sure it’d be for you
