So let me get this straight: we're going to take one of the biggest national security liabilities ever created and sell it to a foreign country, and Saudi Arabia at that?! Seriously?

I won't ask everyone to watch this 19-min video about the link between the CIA, NSA, and Pokemon Go, but it's real. I copied some of the text below:

Way back in 2001, Keyhole, Inc. was founded by John Hanke (who previously worked in a "foreign affairs" position within the U.S. government). The company was named after the old "eye-in-the-sky" military satellites. One of the key, early backers of
Keyhole was a firm called In-Q-Tel. In-Q-Tel is the venture capital firm of the CIA.

This game took all that info from your phone and could track the following:

    • Where you are
    • Where you were
    • What route you took between those locations
    • When you were at each location
    • How long it took you to get between them
    • What you are looking at right now
    • What you were looking at in the past
    • What you look like

In March of 2017, a little less than a year after this article was originally published, WikiLeaks released what they called "Vault 7." A series of documents that was purported to be a large leak of CIA related documents focused heavily on hacking
and electronic surveillance. Among those documents was a list of code names, descriptions, and various details around Android specific exploits.

Of the code names listed... almost a third of them were Pokémon names. Between that and the CIA investment (via In-Q-Tel) in Niantic (the company behind Pokémon Go)... I mean, that's just a heck of a lot more Pokémon than one would expect from
    the CIA.

The original CEO of In-Q-Tel was a man named Gilman Louie. Louie received multiple awards for his work with In-Q-Tel - including CIA Agency Seal Medallions, Director's Award by the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, and Director of
National Intelligence Medallion - which included investing in Keyhole.

Louie now sits on the board of directors of Niantic.

In November 2024, Niantic announced the following plan: At Niantic, we are pioneering the concept of a Large Geospatial Model that will use large-scale machine learning to understand a scene and connect it to millions of other scenes globally.

I'll spare the rest of the details, but pretty much the CIA now has a map inside your house. And where things are in your house, and where you usually are positioned in your house, what you're doing, what everyone else is doing, the time of day you do said things, etc...

Look at all those awards the CIA gave Gilman for creating this. The CIA backed a 3D Map AI that was used all over the place. Don't forget the fact that this app was used in so many sensitive and secret locations across the world, including military bases. All Niantic had to do was put a gym on the map wherever they wanted info from and someone was going to go point their cameras all over that spot to compete.

And for some reason, they're about to sell ALL of this data to Saudi Arabia. WTF?

I’ll admit that I don’t know a whole bunch about this kind of stuff. But out of curiosity, how is it different from them getting this info from just smartphone use in general? They already can listen in, have access to all kinds of info we willingly give, satellite access, public records, etc. I mean I guess this makes it easier? I’ll watch the video later but I feel like all that info can be easily obtained by other methods or by force if they really want it. Now the selling it part is definitely concerning. And I’d rather not have it be in the hands of Saudi Arabia

I got to see this at a festival last year and it’s equal parts hilarious and heartwarming, highly recommend people check it out if the premise interests you at all (and I believe Mubi is still offering a free trial)

A real time with pause combat system is not what I'd call weird. FF12 is just a cRPG. lol

it's not though. it's an MMO style auto-attack system with pause and the gambit system. plenty weird, especially for the time and in the context of final fantasy.

It was really fun. I liked it better than outer worlds. It had a lot more exploration than I thought it would. The parkour is pretty fun. Combat got repetitive towards the end. I did nearly all side stuff and wrapped it up in a little over 30 hours played. The side quests were a lot of fun and thought they were much stronger than the main story.

If you’re someone who really tries for 100% completion, get ready to create about 5000 manual saves.

solid 8/10. and would recommend it for sure

Gambits are just AI scripting and real time with pause has been around in cRPGs since the late 90s. You can legit get the FF12 combat experience these days in something like Pillars of Eternity. I guess the main difference is positioning has less of a focus but it functions nearly identically otherwise. Weird for FF and I can see why a lot of FF veterans at the time of its release didn't understand it, but that system is my jam.
