So that sounds like a skill issue for you. How is that their fault? Play more, get better, unlock the levels. That is a you problem.

You're grinding in real life to unlock the levels, if that works better.

Not everyone is as skilled as others. It can be people who only have a limited amount of time to play the game or people with disabilities that limit their ability to play well. Control allows players to edit all sorts of difficulty settings, so this isn't impossible.

You are taking the side of corporations over individuals who are paying for the product. Why defend them?

I'm not defending them. I'm saying you're complaining because you bought a game you're not good enough to play and don't have the time to practice at and then you're blaming the game for it. That's fucking dumb. If you have time to grind in or play an RPG at all, then you have time to practice a platformer made E for everyone. So it's a skill issue and a research issue because you bought the game. How you think this is sticking up for a corporation is fucking beyond me. lol

You are being very silly about this. This is not a "defend the corporations" issue where secret content somehow gets them more money. I'm sorry you don't have the time to play the game and want immediate gratification. Some of us enjoy the challenge. And don't spin this by bringing disability into it; we're talking about bonus content that is not required to play to finish the game. We're starting to get into "why don't From games have an easy mode" territory.

Time to practice? Research? This is a video game for enjoyment, not a job that pays a salary.

Donkey Kong Returns was already a notoriously difficult game, which is why they added things to make the game easier, so I don't know what the E rating is supposed to mean. Things like the Kong letters and other secrets are made even harder. I don't know why you object so strongly to more people being able to play more of the game. How does it impact your enjoyment of the game?

Spin what? There are lots of disabled people who play video games. I know one of my students has a special controller for her XBox because she does not have full use of her hands.

Why is immediate gratification bad for a product you paid money for? What is this supposed to even be? You can buy a book and read the last chapter if you want or watch the last ten minutes of a movie. How does it ruin your experience if other people get to experience the full content of the product they purchased?

Because it's a weird ass complaint that is a personal issue that you're blaming the game for. I don't play any soulslike games because I suck at them. I don't blame the game for that. I just don't play them. If you knew the game was difficult and it would be difficult to you, you shouldn't have bought the game. So yes, that's a research issue because you wasted money on a game you can't play because you aren't good and don't have time. It's just a remaster of a game. They didn't remake it because they knew it would be too tough for you. You bought the wrong game. Again, that's a you thing. You say you'd prefer grinding in games, but a lot of people don't. Does it makes sense for them to come in here crying that grinding shouldn't be in RPGs when it's a main mechanic in the genre? No, because that's what the games are. You knew what the game was already. That's on you. I personally look into stuff before I waste money on them, but you do you I guess.

What happens if you access the levels and they're too hard for you because they're supposed to be challenge levels? Are you going to complain they don't have a way to lower the difficulty?

Part of the fun of gaming is challenge and completion. It's why gaming can be likened to a sport as much as a film or book.

I honestly just skimmed cuz I can’t believe “Games shouldn’t let you unlock things with skill” is a real debate

First game I ever owned on Sega Genesis. Never beat it. Too hard.

I never said I preferred grinding in games. I said I gravitated toward them because it was a way around something that was too hard to beat. Of course, I was talking about when I was a kid in the late-Nineties or so, and my tolerance for grinding is much lower. However, game developers realized that too, which is why modern RPG's have gotten much better at pacing their games to hide or eliminate grinding.

I have played all of the Donkey Kong Country games so saying I bought the "wrong" game is weird. All I want is more people to be able to experience them in their entirety. You can feel the same way about the games you are mentioning that make it too difficult for you to enjoy them. We should want games to be as accessible to as many people as possible. This is why Control was so great for its accessibility options.

Hey, DKC3 required you to do a whole bunch of tasks to access a secret world, how did you feel about that?

I get the hype for FF7 now. Just met Aerith in Remake and totally understand why all these characters are iconic.

I don’t think you’re necessarily wrong, but it is indeed very standard, not just in platformers, so I’m not sure it is a fair knock on this game individually haha

Because you knew the game would be hard and you bought it expecting that they made it easier for you for some reason. That is your mistake. I don't see what's difficult to understand.

They literally did make the game easier. They added an extra heart and it will beat a level for you if you die multiple times.

It just happened to be the game I was playing at the time. It came right after Control, which allowed me to alter all sorts of difficulty settings at any time, so it stood out more.

I understand wanting games to be accessible, and I even understand wanting to just enjoy the game, but there is a difference between not being able to play the game and not being able to play content specifically designed to challenge the gamer.

So you agree it's a skill issue then? Because they did make it easier for you and you're still complaining about it. This isn't an accessibility thing. This is a you thing. It's not that deep or complicated. No one is defending Nintendo. You're complaining about a mechanic of the game that's serving its purpose.
