Actually, I should add that if they will kill the disc drive, I might stop upgrading, because that’d be the end of a lot of my library

Getting new releases digital rather than physical here is so fiscally irresponsible, physical is like 10-20 euros cheaper.

Physical won't do you any good when someone breaks in and snaps all your discs.

Why? I can still play them.

Some games I have played recently:

Halo 4: The last game chronologically in the Master Chief collection, and unquestionably the worst. The fights are just not fun, especially the two legged soldier that takes an entire magazine of ammunition just to break their shield. 5 isn't available on Steam, so this might be the end of the series for me.

Donkey Kong Country Returns HD: I knew that they put very little effort into the game for its full price tag, but I loved the original game anyway. There was talk about extra levels from the 3DS version, but the 9th world requires you to have collected certain items from earlier levels. Why do I have to get locked out of content for something I purchased? Can you imagine if a novel took out a chapter or a TV show withheld an episode?

Control: On the complete other side of locking out players is Control. You can modify so many difficulty settings, even going so far to become immortal. It isn't locked either, so it lets you modify things when it gets too hard or easy. It is a very creative and spooky game, proving once again that the emptiness of the unknown can often be more mysterious than just throwing things at people. The way the door locks fold in on themselves is a Metroidvania trademark, but it is mostly for convenience for backtracking while still feeling like a fun reward.

Hades: I got to 72% defense on God Mode before I could beat the final boss, so I don't know how regular people do it. Dying felt so annoying knowing what you would have to go through again, but there was something very satisfying about blowing past the first few bosses after you had gotten to a certain level of skill and rewards. Apparently there is even more if you beat it multiple times, but life is too short.

You do realize 90% of platformer games do this, right? Secret levels you can get to only by getting special items? The previous DKC games did this. Super Mario World did this.

That's why you must always be vigilant. Forget food and water, always buy games.

Why does that matter? A practice being common does not mean it is right.

I think that is one of the reasons I gravitated toward RPG's when I was young. If you hit a roadblock, you could always grind your way out of it.

It's right when it's a mechanic used by most of the genre.

RPGs have stuff you can not only miss, but you can lock yourself out of and have to play the game over again to see.

How is that any different or better than asking a gamer to explore previous levels to unlock bonus levels?

Locking people out of content isn't right. That is the entire point. It is a weird practice, especially given the considerably higher cost of entry compared to other art forms.

How are you locked out of content? Play the game to unlock the content. That's the whole point.

It's almost like they call it replay value.

A lot of players are not good enough to get it. They literally added an extra heart because the original game was too hard, and the game will beat a level for you so you can move on. Getting the extra items and secrets are even harder and the game just won't give you them.

This. It's about replayability, exploration, finding secrets and the joy of discovery. Get good at the f'n game, champ.
