  1. Any other essential VR titles besides Alyx I should look out for?

Yakuza 3: No matter what happens in the story, these games pretty much always end up with you fighting on the top of a tower, shirtless along with your opponent, and after you beat them they end up sacrificing their life to save you from the true villain. It has the reputation of being the worst in the series, and so far it deserves it. The series has very strong cinematic ambitions, and the long portions of Kiryu running an orphanage and walking back and forth to town can work very well in a movie but it is a chore to play in a game. Because 1 and 2 received the Kiwami remakes, this is now the "oldest" game, and it feels so much less fun to play than 0, 1, and 2 so far.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: When it's good, it's good. Seeing Cosmo Canyon and The Gold Saucer fully realized is wonderful, and little things like The Lost Number popping up in Hojo's lab is as fun as when the house shows up as an enemy in Don Corneo's arena in Remake. However, this overarching new narrative of Whispers and alternate worlds and timelines really isn't working and it is a symptoms of Nomura's longtime shortcomings. The original game is still talked about today because of the story, so you are really going after your biggest strength. All of the teases of potential changes to the established narrative ended up to nothing; just like Rebirth, the game takes a couple of detours but ultimately ends up where you would expect it to. Sometimes you overthink.

Learned that apparently there is DLC for Hacknet that released 7 years ago, so I guess I'm gonna boot that game up again.

Feeling nostalgic today, decided to make my top 10 of RPGs, felt like sharing and wanna ask about y'all's. I'm sure a Trails game will eventually fit in here SOMEWHERE once I get through the series.

    Xenogears
    Suikoden 2
    Final Fantasy 8
    Nier
    Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep
    Xenoblade Chronicles 3
    Kingdom Hearts 2
    Final Fantasy 13-2
    Shadow Hearts 2
    Final Fantasy 12

    Honorable Mentions:
    Xenoblade Chronicles 2
    Suikoden 5
    Wild Arms
    I just started Yakuza 5.

    Cars!

Also resuming XBC3 and got to chapter 6. It says a lot about this game that I put it in my top 10 and haven't even finished it yet. It's just that damn good. It might even climb up ranks after finishing it and it's DLC.

This is a very interesting idea. I'd be very curious to see other people's list because there's been such a massive difference in what old RPGs and modern RPGs are like. I wonder which direction people tend to lean.

  10. While we're kinda on the topic of top down isometric games I'd like to also mention Dandy Ace, Dreamscaper, and of course Hades. They're more like rogues than linear story missions

I think The Ascent is also isometric? I saw it on Gamepass and then on sale on Steam but I never tried it

I’ll be real with you: no.

if you’re on a quest, resident evil 4 is also really good but everything else, especially in comparison, is just hot embarrassing garbage. I’m sorry.

Most of mine skew older mainly because I feel those stories gripped me back then and I have yet to find much that does the same nowadays. I could expand on the nier entry and include the entire DrakeNier franchise, as I could also easily include the entire xeno franchise as a single entry because every game has been stellar (yes even saga 2 lol). Same with the Kingdom Hearts franchise lol. These franchises with actual sequels that build the world and are full of lore is my weakness. That's why I'm sure Trails will be there somewhere one day on my list. And all these franchises have stayed top tier since early beginnings in pixels to now. And looking forward, I know if it's a FF, xeno, Trails or nier it's undoubtedly going to be good.

In the end I think I value story more than anything else. Even over gameplay. For example I had to go edit in FF13-2 because while I wasn't a fan of the battle system or gameplay or even the 13 trilogy, the story was great and featured what I consider one of the best villains in FF history. As much as I absolutely LOVED Baldurs Gate 3 the story was just....meh. The overall game was a blast to play, plenty of replayability to try different branches and there was so much variation. But the story didn't grab me.

But yeah I'm interested to see what other people post. I think the games will probably reflect our age lol, like I know with FFs one generation for hooked on 7, one on 10 and then there's the old school 4/5/6 generation.

Only picking one from a single franchise:

    Final Fantasy X
    Kingdom Hearts 2
    NieR Automata
    Trails of Cold Steel III
    Persona 3
    Undertale
    Earthbound
    Skies of Arcadia
    Tales of the Abyss
    Yakuza:Like a Dragon

this was very difficult and would probably change if you asked me tomorrow lol

Unrelated to the RPG Discussion (Will say that Persona 4 or FFX is my RPG goat though), I did a couple runs of Death Must Die and this game seems pretty rad, and much more difficult than other survivor-likes from the jump

Not about to do a Top 10, but even though Trails lives rent-free in my head now, Lunar and Arc The Lad will always be my greatest loves.

Chrono Trigger, Alundra, the Wild Arms series, the Breath of Fire series, and Parasite Eve are also way up there.

Final Fantasy goes without saying, especially 4, 6, and 9.

I'm up to House Beneviento in Village and this is the most on edge I've ever been playing a game, have to take a break every 5 minutes lmfao
