Players Log: PokeMMO aka Dustin's MMO rambling

I'm almost through with Johto in PokeMMO but have explored around quite a bit and done all kinds of side content. Making Pokemon into a MMORPG spanning every region has been a big request and for a fanmade project I'm so impressed with how well executed this is. It's great for Pokemon and MMO players of all levels and scratches the MMORPG itch I've had for a bit now. It's a nice reminder of how demanding a game of that sort can be, but strikes a really nice balance between demanding gameplay and allowing relaxation, I don't get much FOMO from taking time away but when I hop on, there's always something to do, and that feels perfect. Setup was easy as well, which was a big concern.

I am still a massive fan of FFXIV. It's my favorite game outside of Hollow Knight and it's been so important to me since A Realm Reborn launched. But this is perfect for the lull period FFXIV seems to be in. FFXIV doesn't demand your time and has an amazing story (it's arguably better as a single player game than anything!) and has a lot of strengths games like WoW can learn from - and has. But FFXIV was never, ever going to be a WoW killer or target any other game in that industry. FFXIV has always been its own experience and people looking for the WoW experience in a different form would likely be disappointed by FFXIV once all is said and done and they're current, there's clearly a different target there and I'm fortunate I'm a part of that target.

With that said PokeMMO feels like something totally different in execution in content loops than these two games (when so many MMORPGs just rip off WoW and call it a day) and that in itself makes it so special. It's lively, entertaining, and offers TONS of content for everyone in all kinds of forms and frequencies. We'll see how I feel when I get "current" but this feels like it'll be in my rotation for a long time (as long as certain corporations don't axe it).

 

PokeMMO is super cool and I think the way they implement the multi-regions is pretty much perfect and it's a really nice way to experience the older regions again (although I played through Sinnoh a little before BD/SP came out which ended up making me not enjoy BD/SP much because I had JUST played it, basically lol), but I think some of the changes they made to make it more "MMO", at least back when I last played (just after Sinnoh was released) really sucked. (I haven't really followed the game except hearing Johto finally came out, so some of this might be outdated)

Pokémon being consumed completely to make an egg because "breeding needs to be a money sink so you have a reason to farm", the shiny rate being like 1/20000 instead of /8192 or /4096 because "they should be more rare", legendaries being completely unobtainable unless you get the one legendary available in each region (but that then makes you unable to decline PVP because ownership of that legendary is transferred by beating the current holder, which admittedly is kinda cool in concept but I just wanna have a Living Dex, I don't wanna be forced in PVP (although I think they changed this recently, right?)), and the level cap, while kind of necessary to maintain some semblance of challenge in a game where you can just buy Pokémon outright, just feels a bit too restrictive. I should be allowed to overlevel if I want.

Overall I think it's a pretty great experience though, probably the best way to "introduce" someone to Pokémon as a series, since you can play together and explore the region together which is super fun. I might fire it up to go through Johto sometime soon.

 

I just went to install it on my Xbox and it directed me to the store to download it. Never encountered that with a game pass release before so I thought it wasn’t supposed to be out already or something. Lol
